EBM house

The EBM house is part of a new development comprising 25 homes, in Marina di Ragusa; its principal characteristic is the units’ disposition in the lot, which gives rise to a “drifted cluster homes” system, where buildings alternate with open spaces. Within this system, the apartment, whose floorplan is long and narrow (5,60m x 26,00m; 8.53’ x 85.3’), is distinguished by a double garden that seem to go through the living space, due to the presence of two wide doors. The entire apartment, with the exception of the kitchen, is an open space, interrupted only by the presence of two colored volumes that contain the main facilities, and function as filters between the sleeping area and the living area. To suit the owner’s changing needs, sliding panels pulled out from the two volumes reshape the apartment, modifying its use; the master bedroom, the walk-in closet, and the master bathroom can be separated from the rest of the apartment, and the study room can be turned into a guest room, with its own private small bathroom. Inside, the whole floor is covered with white polyurethane resin; the two volumes are made of wood and bricks, and covered with the same RAL. Outside, the terraces and walking paths are made of troweled concrete bordered by Tunisian limestone. The project, based on the idea of experiencing the apartment as a unitary living space, allows for a lot of flexibility, so that different areas can adapt to various needs; this raises the question of whether changing the living standards that define modern urban parameters could eliminate the conventional idea of home.

Casa EBM fa parte di una lottizzazione di 25 alloggi realizzata a Marina di Ragusa, la cui caratteristica principale sta nella disposizione delle varie unità nel lotto; ciò dà luogo ad un sistema a “schiera slittata” in cui si alternano volumi edificati e spazi aperti. All’interno di questo sistema l’appartamento, con una pianta stretta e lunga (5,60m x 26,00m), è caratterizzato da un doppio giardino che sembra attraversarlo grazie a due ampie aperture. Uno spazio libero, dell’intera dimensione della casa ad eccezione della cucina, è interrotto dalla presenza di due volumi colorati che contengono i servizi principali e che fungono da filtro tra la zona notte e la zona giorno. A seconda delle esigenze mutevoli dei proprietari, dai volumi possono essere estratti dei pannelli scorrevoli che ridisegnano lo spazio modificandolo nell’uso; si possono isolare la camera da letto, il guardaroba e il bagno personale dal resto della casa, lo studio può diventare una camera per ospiti con relativo piccolo servizio. Tutta la superficie interna è ricoperta di resina poliuretanica bianca, i volumi tecnici sono realizzati in legno e muratura trattati con lo stesso RAL. All’esterno i percorsi di distribuzione e le terrazze sono realizzati in cemento lisciato contenuto da pietra tunisina. Il progetto, nato dall’idea di vivere la casa come fosse un’ unico spazio, garantisce un ampio regime di flessibilità e permette agli ambienti di adattarsi a situazioni diverse inducendoci ad una riflessione: alterando gli standard abitativi su cui sono impostati i parametri urbanistici odierni viene meno l’idea convenzionale di casa.
