BIOS Architecture

BIOS Architecture wants to be an integral part of the most vital processes for changing the built environment. BIOS is essential. It means, “Basic Input/Output System”. It is a process that precedes and is necessary to all others. Bios is also the Greek root for “bio”. It means, “(the course of) human life”. BIOS Architecture, therefore believes that Architecture is a process absolutely necessary to existence. BIOS provides a full range of architectural services: programming, site planning, code analysis, design, construction documents and job management. We have done so for a broad range of programs and clients, from public housing and community health clinics to restaurants and private residences. Along with talent and training, our experience has given us the ability to make the most of a project’s constraints and opportunities. It has also given us the reflexes to manage the ‘unknowns’ that arise in a project. Along with our experience has come the conviction that ‘good’ Architecture is predicated on the infallible resolution of all matters practical and technical. Budgets and timelines must be met. Zoning and code issues must be resolved. Buildings must stand and keep us safe and comfortable. They must be feasible to maintain and cannot rot or fall apart. BIOS believes all this to be ‘given’ before the ‘good’ practice of Architecture can even begin to be undertaken. It is integral to a project’s integrity. Another cornerstone of BIOS is that ‘good’ Architecture is the result of practicing in a manner imbued with honesty. If we practice honestly then the question of ‘style’ need never arise and, ultimately, we need not worry about it. Architecture is, at its core, a creative endeavor practiced by individuals and, if we do, indeed, practice with honesty, we cannot help but be ‘there’ in a projects’ final realization. A project is free, then, to transcend the sum of its program and materials. It can now stand to the approval and improvement of the client, the designer, the design community and the community at large. Firmness, commodity and delight.
