The cottage is designed to highlight and enhance the milieu for which it was created – to help the owners to greater appreciate that they are “at the lake”. It contrasts, but without forcing or imposing itself onto the site. The owners should not be forced to pay attention to the building but should be rewarded if they do. Their attention should be able to oscillate comfortably between foreground and background. This is achieved by keeping the building geometrically crisp, with well defined edges, against the wild background and by providing clean, neutral and uncluttered interiors. This goal is further achieved by providing framed views to the outside as opposed providing window walls. The intention is that the users’ gaze is more assertively directed to the outdoors as opposed to being passively surrounded by nature.
