The Freelon Group, founded in 1990 by Philip G. Freelon, FAIA, is a 60 person architecture firm located in Durham, North Carolina. Our firm is dedicated to serving clients, the community and its employees in a team environment, while providing excellent design solutions for the benefit of all. Our work focuses on research and education, health and well-being, high performance workplaces, the advancement of understanding between disparate cultures and the creative expression of the arts. Through on-time, on-budget delivery of high-quality design projects, Freelon has earned the respect and praise of both public and private sector clients. From public libraries, museums, corporate offices and parks, to hospitals, science labs and university buildings, Freelon strives to create unique and sustainable environments that lift the human spirit and inspire us with a better understanding of who we are as individuals and as a community. At the heart of all Freelon projects is an ambition to place the art of architecture within reach of the everyday citizen. Freelon building designs have received numerous awards including 52 American Institute of Architects (AIA) national, regional, state and local design awards. Our firm is also the recipient of the 2012-2015 Intern Development Program (IDP) Outstanding Firm Award, 2010 F. Carter Williams Gold Medal, 2009 AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture, 2008 Contract Magazine Designer of the Year and the 2001 AIA North Carolina Outstanding Firm Award in recognition of outstanding service and design excellence. Freelon has completed or is actively working on projects from San Francisco to Baltimore, and Charlotte to Washington, DC. Current commissions include new museums and cultural projects in Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA, Houston, TX, Jackson, MS, Chicago, IL, Orangeburg, SC and Atlanta, GA. Freelon is well versed in leveraging technology and collaborative relationships to deliver projects in geographically diverse areas. Our education and science/technology clients include Yale University, MIT, South Carolina State, University of Maryland, along with other campuses in the University of North Carolina system. Freelon has also designed three behavioral healthcare facilities for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as well as the Health and Human Services complex for Durham County.
