ENG - Located on Norway’s west coast, Trollstigen is perched within a dramatic pass between the deep fjords that characterize the region. This panoramic site can only be visited and constructed in summer, due to severe winter weather. Despite—or perhaps because of—the inaccessible nature of the site, the project entails designing an entire visitor environment ranging from a mountain lodge with restaurant and gallery to flood barriers, water cascades, bridges, and paths to outdoor furniture and pavilions and platforms meant for viewing the scenery. All of these elements are moulded into the landscape so that the visitor’s experience of place seems even more intimate. The architectural intervention is respectfully delicate, and was conceived as a thin thread that guides visitors from one stunning overlook to another.
MATERIALITY The project consist of mainly cor-ten steel and in-situ concrete, because of the extremely hard local climate. Supplementary materials are glass, hard wood and turf. All the materials are carefully chosen so the architecture is to be characterized by clear and precise transition between the architecture and the natural landscape
SIZE The Trollstigen plateau is a very comprehensive architectural project, both in program, complexity and extension. It covers an area of approximately 200.000 m2 that from one end to the other takes about twenty minutes of continuous walking. At the same time the complex is dimensioned to receive a lot of people in a short time. Around 600,000 people distributed in 100,000 vehicles visit the site during the summer months. This lay down large demands to infrastructure and logistics. The total building area is 1200 m2.
SUSTAINABILITY The following issues are important for the sustainability of the project:
- Durability in all details / The architectural installations have been build so they can withstand the violent forces of nature. In summer, autumn and spring, there have been major floods causing extensive damage. The amounts of snow in the winter months are so large that extraordinary static, solid solutions are required. Since the project consists of a number of individual measures, it is organized into a system of sub site development.
- Grey water / All grey water is filtered locally at the site through a series of sand reservoirs recycled directly into nature.
- Black water / This is extremely reduced using vacuum sanitary systems.
- Self sufficient energy consumption / Trollstigen will be self sufficient with energy with the use of a local mini hydro power plant, which is a part of the project.
Low energy consumption / The project is provided with low infra structure consumption energy installations in all parts.
ITA - Sulla costa occidentale della Norvegia, si dispiega tra le potenti bellezze naturali dei fiordi l’affascinante “National Tourist Route”. La splendida area naturale, estesa su una superficie di 600.000 metri quadri, visitabile solo d’estate a causa delle bassisime temperature invernali, è oggetto di un intervento in progress di realizzazione, sistemazione ed organizzazione dei servizi turistici commissionato dal Ministero dei Trasporti norvegese.
La realizzazione della “National Tourist Route” coinvolge 18 team di progettisti norvegesi, chiamati a sviluppare una serie di strutture ecosostenibili per l’accoglienza e l’orientamento dei turisti in altrettante località.
Nelle località di Møre e Romsdal, su progetto di Reiulf Ramstad Architects (Oslo), è stata realizzata la Trollstigen, ovvero la “Strada dei Troll”, un’area turistica percorsa da un tragitto pedonale che richiede 20 minuti di cammino. Le dimensioni dell’area consentono di accogliere contemporaneamente grandi gruppi di visitatori. Circa 600.000 persone, distribuite in 100.000 veicoli visitano il sito durante i mesi estivi. La superficie totale edificata è di 1200 mq.
“Nonostante, o forse proprio a causa della natura inaccessibile del sito, il progetto ha previsto una serie di spazi dedicati ai visitatori che vanno da un rifugio montano con annessi ristorante e galleria espositiva (800 mq) agli argini fluviali, passando per salti d’acqua, ponti e percorsi con arredi per esterni, fino ad arrivare a una serie di piattaforme e padiglioni panoramici da cui godere dell’incantevole scenario naturale circostante. Tutti questi elementi sono modellati nel paesaggio in modo da regalare un’esperienza del luogo “intima” e personale. L’intervento architettonico è rispettoso del contesto ed è stato concepito come un filo sottile che guida da una meraviglia all’altra”, spiegano da Reiulf Ramstad Architects.
Acciaio cort-ten e cemento grezzo in lastre sono i principali materiali costruttivi impiegati nel progetto, in un suggestivo dialogo con le pareti rocciose, ammantate in estate di grigio e verde, che caratterizzano il sito. Protetto da parapetti in acciaio, cemento o vetro, tutto l’itinerario si snoda, si spezza e si “apre” su più quote dando vita a diversi punti di osservazione panoramica.
Grande attenzione è stata dedicata alla progettazioni di infrastrutture solide, dalla statica eccezionale, in grado di poter resistere alla poderosa forza delle alluvioni che si scatenano in estate, autunno e primavera, e alla formazione dei ghiacci invernali.
Tra le soluzioni “eco” adottate, l’inserimento in loco di una mini centrale idroelettrica che rende il sito autosufficiente dal punto di vista energetico. Tutte le acque grigie sono filtrate in loco da una serie di serbatoi realizzati con materiali di riciclo, mentre la quantità di acque nere è estremamente ridotta grazie all’uso di impianti sanitari Vacuum System.
