From the fortification to the landscape
The town of is a compact walled village, where the main street follows a tangential path to its core, embedding a series of extramural constructions that open directly to the landscape. The project intervenes in one of these constructions and confronts two realities: the traditional historical nucleus and the agricultural landscape of Baix Empordà.

Recovering an original construction
It is a noble house between party walls, a small palace with an imposing facade on Carrer Major in Corçà. A centuries-old building, consisting of a main construction with a ground floor, main floor, and attic, to which successive extensions towards the garden were added over the centuries. This sedimentation results in a dark and intricate space. The uses are hierarchized following the traditional scheme of allocating the ground floor to livestock and secondary uses, the main floor to the residence, and the attic to garret. As a result of this situation, the relation with the garden is practically disconnected from the house. The ground floor is semi-buried and the entrance to the garden is solved through stairs from the first floor.
Considering the precarious state of historical extensions, the selective demolition of this constructions is carried out, preserving the original building. By constructing a new volume, the connection with the rear part of the plot is recovered, articulating a set formed by three episodes: the palace, the house, and the garden.

The Palace. To perforate and to preserve
It is a traditional, stone-built construction. A structure consisting of a large main space and two narrower spans, where the rooms are defined by the structure itself. Due to the building's typology, the interior heights are quite low, except for some singular spaces, and the windows are of reduced dimensions. Though the strategic demolition of certain floors a vertical void illuminates the core of the house. A set of connected double-heigh spaces transform an excessively compartmentalized palace into a large vertical agora.
Existing constructive elements, such as masonry door lintels, stone window seats, a stone pillar supporting the roof structure, among others, are enhanced. Although the distribution is modified, the original openings are preserved, both for internal communications and to address the connection with the new construction, directing the gaze towards the garden.

The House. A rational construction
The functional program is completed through the construction of a new prismatic element that is inserted between the existing irregular walls. It is not an independent volume, as it is designed as another piece of the main construction. The heights and levels adapt to the existing structure, and both materially and formally the project does not seek to stand out above the palace, being constructed with a unidirectional structure of wooden beams and ceramic vaults.
Spaces are unified by plastering the walls and painting the ceiling structures, that are left exposed. This enhances natural lighting and noble materials such as stone and wood. A stone floor, following the orthogonal direction of the new volume, extends all along the house, while new doors fold within the existing thickness of the original walls.
This new construction addresses the rear facade of the dwelling, understood from a logic of vertical openings aligned with existing ones. Through the house, the palace is visually connected to the garden.

The Garden. Transition of terraces
Considering the original disconnection between the house and the garden due to a difference in levels, a new transition is proposed through a series of terraces, increasingly less built and more porous.
Life is projected towards the outside through the construction of simple elements, such as a pergola, a bench, and a planter. Existing elements such as the well and sheds are preserved and integrated into this terrace system, constructed with traditional materials such as ceramic tiles and plaster. This minimal intervention relies on the strength of the existing vegetal heritage, where time will eventually merge the house within its surroundings.

The construction of a joint
The project relies on a set of specific actions that recognize the physical and temporal context in which they are located. Constructive historical elements are highlighted, and the house articulates the connection between two realities, from Carrer Major to the garden, from the wall to the landscape.

La Vila de Corçà es caracteritza per ser un nucli emmurallat compacte, on el carrer Major hi passa tangencialment, enfilant un seguit de construccions extramurs que s’obren directament al paisatge. El projecte intervé sobre una d’aquestes construccions i conjuga les dues realitats, la d’un nucli històric tradicional, protegit pel patrimoni, i la del paisatge agrícola del Baix Empordà.

Recuperar un cos original
Es tracta d’una casa senyorial entre mitgeres, un petit palau amb una façana imponent al carrer Major de Corçà. Una construcció centenària, formada per un cos de planta baixa, principal i sotacoberta, on al llarg dels segles s’hi van afegir successives ampliacions cap al jardí. D’aquesta sedimentació en resulta un espai fosc i enrevessat. Es jerarquitzen els usos seguint l’esquema tradicional de destinar la planta baixa al bestiar i usos secundaris, la planta principal a la residència i la sotacoberta a golfes. A resultes d’aquesta situació, la connexió amb el jardí queda pràcticament deslligada de la casa, deixant la planta baixa semisoterrada i accedint-hi a través d’unes escales des de la primera planta.
Atenent al precari estat de les ampliacions històriques, es resol enderrocar selectivament aquests cossos mantenint la nau principal, l’original. Mitjançant la construcció d’un nou volum, es recupera la connexió amb la part posterior de la parcel·la, articulant un conjunt format per tres episodis; el palau, la casa i el jardí.

El Palau. Perforar i mantenir
Es tracta d’una construcció tradicional, muraria, de pedra. Un cos format per un gran espai principal i dues crugies més estretes, on la mateixa estructura defineix les habitacions. Per la tipologia d’edifici i la seva època de construcció, les alçades interiors són força baixes, a excepció d’algun espai singular, i les finestres són de dimensions reduïdes. Es proposa un buidat estratègic de determinats trams de forjats, per tal d’il·luminar el centre, tot enllaçant un conjunt de dobles espais que converteixen un palau excessivament compartimentat en una gran àgora vertical.
Es posen en valor els elements constructius existents tant rics com son els passos de porta amb unes dovelles imponents, els festejadors a les finestres, un pilar de pedra on recolza l’estructura de la coberta, entre d’altres.
Tot i que es modifica la distribució, les obertures originals es mantenen, tant per les comunicacions interiors com per resoldre el contacte amb la nova construcció, centrant la mirada cap al jardí.

La Casa. Una construcció discreta i racional
Es construeix un nou volum de forma prismàtica regular que s’insereix dins d’aquests murs existents i irregulars per acabar de completar el programa funcional. No es tracta d’un volum exempt sinó que es projecta com una peça més de la construcció principal. Les alçades i els nivells s’adapten a l’estructura existent, i tant materialment com formal, no busca en cap cas destacar per sobre del palau, essent resolta amb una estructura unidireccional senzilla de bigues de fusta i revoltó ceràmic.
A nivell material s’unifiquen els espais interiors, enguixant els murs i pintant les estructures dels sostres, que es deixen vistes. Es potencia així la il·luminació natural i els materials nobles, com la pedra i la fusta. Un paviment de pedra que segueix la direcció ortogonal del nou cos s’estén del cap a tots els racons de la casa, mentre que les noves portes es repleguen dins el gruix existent dels murs originals.
Aquesta nova construcció resol la façana posterior de l’habitatge, que s’entén des d’una lògica de forats verticals que s’alineen amb els existents. A través de la casa, el palau queda visualment connectat amb el jardí.

El Jardí. Transició de terrasses
Front a la desconnexió original entre la casa i el jardí, fruit d’una diferència de nivells, es proposa una nova transició a partir d’un seguit de terrasses, cada cop menys construïdes i més poroses.
Es projecta la vida cap a l’exterior mitjançant la construcció d’elements senzills, com són una pèrgola, un banc i una jardinera. Elements existents tals com el pou i els coberts es mantenen i s’integren dins d’aquest sistema de terrasses, que es resol constructivament amb materials tradicionals com son la tova i l’arrebossat. Aquesta actuació de mínims confia en la força del patrimoni vegetal existent, on el pas del temps acabarà lligant la casa amb el territori.

La construcció d’una frontissa
El projecte es recolza en un conjunt d’actuacions específiques, que reconeixen el context físic i temporal on se situen. Es posen en valor elements constructius propis d’una tipologia històrica, i la casa recupera la connexió entre dues realitats, del Carrer Major cap al jardí, de la muralla cap al paisatge.
