Located in the old historical centre of the municipality of Campos, a town located in southern Mallorca. Most constructions fall into the category of single-family homes consisting of two-story party walls. In the past, the ground floor was typically used as a home, and the first floor, as a pantry and for general agricultural purposes.

Traditional architecture retains a certain isolation from the road it’s on, something which we are interested in maintaining. In the past, this was important from an energy efficiency perspective as well as security today, it is more about privacy and intimacy. Additionally, we believe that any intervention we carry out, ensures the highest possible level of quietness and is respectful, with the key objective being not to disfigure local architecture, tradition, and culture.

The patio is an essential space of Mediterranean architecture, which always plays a central role in all our projects. One of our main priorities where we are able, is not to reduce the size of the patio, something which is of great value for a home. Given our climate, the patio behaves like another room of the house and is usable practically all year round.

Townhouses, which used to be the cornerstone of small grocery shops in the town, used to use the first bay as the shop, and the rest of the space as a home. Once part of the house stopped being used as a grocery shop, more than 40 years ago, this house remained unchanged.

In this type of architectural intervention, we always try to maintain the structure and space as it was initially. Opening, removing, or excessively modifying the original structure which consists of thick stone walls, is always complex and traumatic for the structure which we are trying to preserve. In this case, our role is primarily to organise the new project around the needs of the space itself and what existed before, and for it to be as coherent as possible - finding a balance between what is needed and what can be effectively achieved.

In this, as in most of our projects, we have worked with materials that are available to us in our immediate surroundings, such as the traditional hydraulic mosaic tiles which come from the Huguet factory located in the same town.

In the end, once our intervention has been completed, we expect to be able to showcase a completely rethought out, singular and contemporary space, which seeks to maintain and recreate the traditional Mediterranean atmosphere found in houses here which we hope will stand the test of time.

Se sitúa en el núcleo antiguo del municipio de Campos, pueblo ubicado al Sur de Mallorca. La tipología constructiva mayoritaria del entorno es de viviendas unifamiliares entre medianeras de dos plantas, en las que antiguamente, la planta baja se solía utilizar como vivienda, y la planta primera, como despensa y usos agrícolas.

La casa, que antiguamente formaba parte del tejido de pequeños colmados del pueblo, utilizaba la primera crujía como tienda, y el resto de planta como vivienda. Desde que la parte de la casa dejara de usarse como verdulería, hace ya más de 40 años, esta casa había permanecido intacta. La arquitectura tradicional, desde siempre, mantiene un cierto hermetismo hacia la calle que nos interesaba mantener. Antes, tenía un sentido de eficiencia energética y seguridad. Hoy en día, tiene que ver más con la privacidad e intimidad del nuevo habitante.

En este tipo de intervenciones, intentamos siempre mantener la estructura y espacios iniciales. Abrir, quitar o modificar en exceso la estructura original de muros de piedra gruesos, siempre es un esfuerzo y un sufrimiento para la propia estructura que intentamos controlar. Por tanto, nuestra función en este caso trata principalmente de organizar el nuevo programa de necesidades en el espacio dado por la preexistencia, siendo lo más coherentes posible y buscando un equilibrio entre lo que se necesita, y lo que se puede obtener. Para nosotros, es un trabajo y también una obligación intentar que nuestras intervenciones se hagan de la manera más respetuosa y silenciosa posible, con la intención de no desfigurar la arquitectura, tradición y cultura local.

El patio, como espacio imprescindible en la arquitectura mediterránea, adquiere siempre un protagonismo especial en nuestros proyectos. El no reducir las dimensiones de éste, en beneficio de la vivienda, siempre es una de nuestras prioridades, entendiendo que, gracias a nuestro clima, el patio es una estancia más de la casa, necesaria y utilizable prácticamente todo el año. 

En este, al igual que en la mayoría de nuestros proyectos, hemos trabajado con materiales que podemos conseguir en el entorno próximo. En el primer piso hemos mantenido las baldosas de aguas o marmoleado y el marés como pavimento. En la planta baja, con unas baldosas muy deterioradas por la humedad por capilaridad, se han substituido por la misma tipología, utilizando el mosaico hidráulico tradicional de la fábrica local, Huguet. 

Al final, después de nuestra intervención, pretendemos mostrar un espacio repensado, singular y contemporáneo, intentando mantener la atmósfera tradicional de la casa mediterránea que debemos hacer prevalecer en el tiempo.
