Oberholz Mountain Hut

Peter Pichler Architecture, in collaboration with Arch. Pavol Mikolajcak, won a competition to design a new mountain hut at 2.000m in the Italian Dolomites in 2015.

The new hut contains a restaurant and is located next to the cable station Oberholz in Obereggen with direct connection to the ski slope.

The cantilevering structure grows out of the hill like a fallen tree with three main branches creating a symbiosis with the landscape. Each of them is facing towards the three most important surrounding mountains. At the end of the branches a large glass facade frames the surrounding mountains from the interior of the hut. The sloped roof shape of the glasses takes his inspiration from typical huts in the area, while the branching roof and complex structural interior expresses a new and contemporary interpretation of the classic mountain hut.

The interior is defined by a complex, curvilinear and visible wood structure that gradually fades into walls and creates so called “pockets” for intimacy. It could also be seen as a new open space interpretation of the classic “Stube”, well known in typical structures of the area.

The entire hut is constructed with wood: structural elements and interior in spruce, the facade in larch, furniture in oak- all typical woods from the area. A homogenous sculpture with local materials.

The ground floor of the hut consists of the main restaurant / lounge area. The bar is located next to the entrance and is directly connected to the restaurant. Kitchen and food storage / delivery space are also on the ground floor. Main restrooms, staff room and technical facilities are located on the -1 floor. The outdoor space is defined by a big terrace oriented towards the southwest.

Peter Pichler Architecture, in collaborazione con l'Arch. Pavol Mikolajcak, ha vinto un concorso per la progettazione di un nuovo rifugio a 2.000 metri sulle Dolomiti italiane, a Obereggen. L’edificio è realizzato con materiali ecosostenibili, situato all’inizio della pista Oberholz integrandosi  perfettamente nella natura che lo circonda.

La struttura a sbalzo cresce dalla collina come un albero steso a terra dal cui tronco nascono tre rami. In completa simbiosi con il paesaggio, ciascun ramo è rivolto verso le tre montagne più importanti della zona: il Mendel, il Corno Nero e il Corno Bianco. Su questi rami curvilinei si sviluppa la tipica forma del tetto a due spioventi, generando al suo interno 3 “pocket”, aree in cui sono distribuiti i tavoli del ristorante, caratterizzate da un’ atmosfera più intima. I tre spazi sono chiusi da una grande facciata in vetro che permette di  inquadrare le tre montagne circostanti.

L'intera struttura è composta in portali in legno di abete rosso che, posti in continuità, enfatizzano la geometria curvilinea dell’edificio. La distanza fra questi portali è variabile, lo spazio vuoto tra un elemento e l’altro è tamponato con pannelli di legno di abete.

L'intera facciata esterna è costituito da doghe di legno di larice giustapposte.

Il rifugio è raggiungibile direttamente tramite la seggiovia ad esso adiacente.

Una volta scesi ci sono due possibilità di raggiungere il rifugio: tramite un ascensore  che conduce direttamente all’interno del rifugio, altrimenti seguendo la strada della pista da sci, che costeggia il rifugio, si traguarda su una terrazza panoramica che costituisce anche l’ingresso al rifugio.

Al piano terra si trovano gli ambienti principali del rifugio, il ristorante, un piccolo salotto, un bar e la cucina. Inoltre ivi è posizionato un piccolo bar rivolto direttamente all’esterno per il servizio dei clienti sulla terrazza panoramica si in estate che in inverno. Nel seminterrato sono allocati i servizi igienici, i magazzini e un'area dedicata al personale.
