Located on a steep hillside in the coastal town of La Jolla, California, the Kafka Residence is a custom home by Safdie Rabines Architects.

The San Diego-based firm took advantage of the challenging site by devising a unique design in which the home “steps” down the slope creating large indoor/outdoor terraces on each level, all offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

The upper level of the residence consolidates the primary living spaces and master bedroom to one floor, a preference of the owner, while floor-to-ceiling glass doors and vast skylights create a light-filled penthouse suite.

A simple rectangular floor plate avoided major earthwork and tall retaining walls that would have otherwise been required. The rectangular solution is divided by an angled retractable glass wall, creating an invisible “line” between the indoor and outdoor spaces, and the sense of an open-air pavilion with unobstructed views that extend for miles along the Southern California shoreline.
