This project involved the renovation of multiple properties along the Prinsengracht (Amsterdam), one of which was completely built anew. An outdoor space was desired adjacent the living areas on the first floor with lots of privacy. This is difficult to realize within all regulations of the historical center. However, as the composition and the details were considered by the buildings aesthetics committee to be of outstanding quality, an exception was allowed.

The new facade is very abstract. The thin horizontal lines create a connection with the adjacent buildings. The surface is vertically articulated with subtle differences per layer. The color has been painstakingly tuned to the historical surroundings.

At the back the properties are connected. The former court-yard was covered with a walkable glass roof, making the monumental rear facade stand out well. Moreover, it creates a nice relation between the ground floor and the outdoor space on the first floor.
