Born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1969. Cárdenas received a Bachelor of Architecture from Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia) in 1993. In 1994 he received a Master of Architecture from SyracuseUniversity in New York and began collaborating with leading architecture firms such as Studio Meiji Watanabe & Associates in Tokyo and Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Paris. In 2002 he obtained a Ph.D. from the Politecnico di Milano School of Interior Architecture with a dissertation on the design of environmentally sensitive work spaces. In 2004 he founded Studio Cárdenas Conscious Design in Milan, a professional design studio that explores a range of issues from public spaces, like multi-propose shopping centers, leisure spaces, to commercial showrooms; residential complexes and even industrial design. Experimenting with the use of natural materials and avant-garde technologies to create a contemporary architectural language that responds to the environment, the search for ‘conscious design’ is pursued in every project undertaken by Studio Cárdenas. From 2006 to 2010 parallely to the studio activities, Cárdenas was consultant for Arup Façade Engineering where he divided his time between Milan and London, working on a wide range of international projects. He was involved with the development of a façade engineering team within the Arup Milan office which he lead. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of Frames Magazine, published by Il Sole 24 Ore Business Media a journal specialized in Building Envelope and of Nemeton Magazine specialized in ecology in architecture. Numerous of the Studio’s projects have been published in international publications and several have been awarded prizes and mentions for the innovative character.
