A-ZERO is a RIBA chartered architectural practice with an expertise in sustainable design. Working at a range of scales and typologies from one-off houses to university master-plans, we aim to create projects which are both responsive and responsible.

By responsive we mean that in addition to responding to historical and cultural context, each building should consider environmental context. In practical terms this means considering the role of daylight, air and heat in reducing the building’s reliance on mechanical systems to create comfortable environments. We explore our designs using environmental simulation tools alongside more traditional architectural model making to inform and validate our design decisions.
By responsible, we mean that our buildings should be put together using systems of construction and materials which have a measurably reduced impact on the environment either in their production or their transport. This can mean many things for different projects, but we think of it as a ‘filter’ through which many of our ideas must pass.
Since our foundation in 2010, in addition to our on-going research and teaching work, our architectural projects have ranged from ultra-low energy housing, to mixed use developments, to commercial refurbishments. We also work closely with other architects on the implementation of low energy strategies into the design of their buildings where environmental considerations are paramount, including O’Donnell + Tuomey Architects and ShSh architects.
