Konishi Gaffney are an award winning architecture practice led by Kieran Gaffney, a Scottish architect, and Makiko Konishi, a Japanese designer. APPROACH We believe that an artistic and sensitive collaboration with the client is the best way to achieve the great solutions that we aspire to. We focus on simple things like light and orientation to the sun; on movement and function; on connections between inside and out; and on materials and their emotional impact. We create buildings that are sensible and modest but also beautiful and atmospheric; buildings that embody a sense of Japanese wabi sabi. PROJECTS We self-built our own house in Edinburgh in 2008 and set up Konishi Gaffney Architects, winning awards for our first two finished projects. We work in three main areas: houses, arts and education projects. We have completed a feasibility study and design to planning stage for a new not-for-profit Kindergarten on the beach in Edinburgh. In August 2011 we won a national architecture competition organised by the Glasgow Institute of Architects to design a "blueprint for the survival and growth of rural communities". And we continue working on a range of houses and extensions
