We experience a great amount of creative buzz that takes us along like an avalanche. In the midst of it all it is a pleasure to find yourself in a quiet corner under the big and colourful ceramic lights. Johanna Tammsalu is a young designer from Tallinn, Estonia where she recently opened her boutique workshop carrying her own name. A cross pollination of Nordic, British, and Iberian design, directly guided by designers like Jaime Hayon and institutions like Boisbuchet led to the creation of Solid Spin Lamp collection. The studio is in constant search of the hidden potential of everyday objects and materials, from high-tech climbing ropes to shoes, dishes and light bulbs. When it comes to materials, there’s always more than meets the eye. All the projects are born through a playful and experimental process, until the desired outcome reflected by simplicity, clear colours and strong personality has been achieved. The Solid Spin Lamp project is meant to reflect these ideas. The Keys, Shoes and Glasses’ lamps were born out of a game of spinning everyday objects. Long shutter picture and video was taken to capture these new shapes. The fuzzy results, resemblant of a butterfly, were frozen in time and with the help of a 3D programme, rotated on their own axis with exciting results and endless possibilities. Solid Spin lamps are handmade in a small ceramic studio with a lot of care to detail and quality.
