The Ballerina Project is an exploration of the elegant beauty of ballet dancers as seen through the lens of photographer Dane Shitagi. He prefers to photograph his subjects outside on the city streets, inspired by the rawness and atmosphere of the urban landscape.
Shitagi can capture not only the ballerina's ability, but her emotions, soul, and passion for the extraordinary art of ballet, in always different contexts.
In the 14 years since its beginning in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Ballerina Project has grown extraordinarily.
The majority of ballerinas who have posed for the project are currently or have danced for companies such as American Ballet Theater, Boston Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dresden Semperopera Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Suzanne Farrell Ballet, Ballet West, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet.
