DESIGN - The Creating Balance Project Showcase  at the London Design Festival 2013, is the result of a year-long collaborative project, initiated by the University of Portsmouth in association with Anglepoise and local community group, Strong Island. This revealing showcase celebrates the talented creative community in Portsmouth, focusing on the working studios and disciplines of artists and designers across the island.

Within the informal and relaxed environment of the Speakeasy Espresso and Brew Bar in central London, The Creating Balance Project Showcase firmly puts the spotlight on creativity outside the capital.

To initiate the project, 10 artists and designers were twinned with 10 photographers all based in Portsmouth; each duo was invited to choose a ‘perfect balance’ task lamp. The aim was to explore the true meaning of balance at work and in life and to document its significance in the creative process. Further insight is provided by a series of videos and behind-the-scenes stills by staff and students at the University of Portsmouth.

In every case, interaction with the lamp became integral to the creative process. Artist, My Dog Sighs, used the lamp as his mixing palette, International Design Agency, I Love Dust covered their lamp with illustrations, whilst Strong Island’s Paul Gonella and Tristan Savage submerged their lamps under the Solent.

The showcase, which includes customised Anglepoise® lamps, video footage and photography, provides a fascinating insight into the creative process and highlights the richness and diversity of Britain’s creative talent.
