Applications to participate in the international competition "Agrivoltaic for Noah's Ark", which will award the "best agrivoltaic garden", are open until 20 June 2022.

The initiative is promoted by ENEA, the NeoruraleHub company, the National Institute of Architecture (IN/Arch), ETA Florence Renewable Energies and the Italian Association of Landscape Architecture (AIAPP). With the support of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Lombardy Region, Municipality of Giussago,  National Council of architects, landscape architects and conservationists, Legambiente and SITdA The Italian Society of Architectural Technology along with the media partnership of Archilovers and Archiportale.

The announcement of the design competition for an agrivoltaic system, comprising 1MWp to 3 MWp, at the NeoruraleHub company (Cascina Darsena, Pavia) is available online at Sustainable photovoltaic landscapes and is open to the participation of architects, landscape architects, agronomists, engineers, energy experts and artists. The winners will be given the professional assignment for the design of the work; the second classified project will be awarded a prize of 5 thousand euros made available by the Solarelit company, while the third classified project will be awarded a reimbursement of expenses of 3 thousand euros, made available by REM TEC.

"In the context of the energy transition, the use of large ground-mounted photovoltaic systems is an essential solution for achieving the objectives set nationally by the various countries", highlights Alessandra Scognamiglio, coordinator of the Sustainable Agriculture Task Force @ENEA and creator of the project. "In this context, agrivoltaic systems can be a possible answer, maximizing the use of land in order to generate energy and food simultaneously, for an increasingly sustainable transformation of the landscape, as well as creating synergies between increasing renewable sources, respect for the landscape and practices appropriate for agricultural crops, so that the energy transition can take place within the framework of an overall ecological transition ".

"The world we imagine today will be the one we will have tomorrow and only through choices that take into consideration people, planet, nature and economy will we be able to aspire to change the logic that today guides the consumption of resources, as well as energy. The change of course begins by optimizing what we have available and using the skills to create innovation, circularity and savings. For us agrivoltaic does not mean joining two worlds, but creating a new one, where energy is produced not at the expense of either the soil, the landscape, nor agricultural production, but it means a new solution that optimizes the two distinct ones in a logical harmonious solution”, declares Piero Manzoni, Founder & CEO of NeoruraleHub.

"The quality of the design of renewable energy infrastructures in the coming years will be a fundamental aspect in the essential need to produce clean energy with the attention and integration of landscape values. For this reason, the competition will make an important contribution to the reflection of the world of design on a subject that has not already been investigated”, underlines Andrea Margaritelli, President of the National Institute of Architecture.

The projects will be awarded on 27 September 2022 in Milan, during the event Photovoltaics | Forms Landscapes 2022, on the occasion of the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (WCPEC8), led by ENEA and scheduled in the capital of Lombard on 26 - 30 September 2022.

This initiative is part of the National Sustainable Agricultural Network, coordinated by ENEA in collaboration with ETA Florence Renewable Energies and in the context to increase the sustainability, efficiency and reliability of photovoltaic technology.
