Stanislav Libenský
Together with his wife and lifelong collaborator, Jaroslava Brychtová, Stanislav Libenský belonged among the pioneers of modern glass. The artistic partnership that lasted nearly 50 years produced some of the most defining cast sculptures and architectural installations of the 20th century. Their monumental works helped elevate glass into a recognized art form, particularly with their Expo ’58 installation that won the 1958 Grand Prize in Brussels. Libenský explored the optical and physical aspects of glass from his background as a painter, complementing his wife’s sculptural approach. He later developed interesting collaborations with architects, including a stained-glass window for Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral. His extensive teaching career helped form the current generation of glass artists both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
