Casa Vale is a project to replace a former fishermen’s house in the historic centre of Ferragudo, a fishing village on the Atlantic coast in the Algarve, Southern Portugal. The original two storey building was used for the storage of fishing nets and equipment at basement level and living space with only basic amenities to the level above. The concept was for a central light well which contains a sculptured timber staircase connecting all levels and spaces. A ‘box’ which opens at both ends houses the kitchen and dining areas and also gives access to the ‘wrap around’ terrace. The solution maximizes floor area internally and externally whilst minimising wasteful circulation space. The roof terrace becomes the communal ‘hub’ of the house. Ultramarino designed all of the interior elements to reflect the understated style of architecture.
