National Theater Company of Korea | URBANTAINER
Seoul / South Korea / 2017
The new social space of the National Theater Company of Korea (NTCK) provides a visitor area that brings together audiences’ everyday lives with the world of theater. As such, it was conceived as an open space inviting everybody involved in the performance scene and those who love theater.Considering the new area’s functionality as a social space within the NTCK, the design concept was based on integrating the new space into the existing building structures by unifying the color and the alignment of the building axis. While highlighting the modular form of containers, the design is deliberately held light and maintains a balance with existing features and objects such as a former oil station and the grass square.
Using the modular character of containers, a 12 meter long open space without columns was created. The utilization of the structural benefits of containers was the foundation for realizing the clients’ wish to create a wide and high space that holds many people.
Following the direction given by containers, moving walls were installed in order to enable a flexible use of the space, maximised with partitions, projector-friendly wall materials and stage elements. Even the bar itself consists of two sliding container doors which can be moved according to the needed space usage.
The interior atmosphere with its light-colored walls and overall warm impression is a conscious counterpoint to the bold red exterior and provides a comfortable environment for the visitors.
All graphic elements were inspired by the NTCK symbol and thus strongly reflects the National Theater Company of Korea’s identity.
