Redevelopment of Central House of Artist

Final exam project for Master in Architecture degree in Milano Politecnic.

Due to the combination of economical and political issues, the Central House of Artist complex has an indefinable future. It is a place where a lot of cultural activities are being held on everyday basis, and yet its huge potential for the city has not been exploited completely. This thesis is not limited to an architectural project. The aim of the research is to develop a strategy, which will help to resolve accumulated conflicts, open a dialog between CHA and TSG and eliminate the risk of museum complex being destroyed and lost forever. And of course to help the Central House of Artist managed to realize all of its potential and became what it was supposed to be originally – a center of that reflects contemporaneity. The strategy offers a series of gradual steps, which, once came to life, will allow to the complex to accumulate the funds for its further development. The future scenario, as soon as it will come to life, will breath in the new life into the Central House of Artist and thus it will become so essential and useful for the city, that even government would not dare to destroy the complex. Based on gravity an scale of interventions, they are divided into main stages: STAGE 1. OPTIMIZATION OF SPACES INSIDE THE EXISTENT BUILDING This intervention is to be the first one, because of its least invasive nature and minimum funds requirement. The optimization of spaces can be subdivided. Therefore the museums can still partly function, while upgrading constantly. Finally, when only a few of the elaborated proposals are realised, the outcome will already improve the state of the current situation. STAGE 2. EXTENSIONS As mentioned above the new extensions design includes the design of 5 types of modules, which house a specific function or their combinations. The modules are designed is such a way, that they can function perfectly combined all together or separately. STAGE 3. LANDSCAPE The landscape concept tries to put forward a strategy for a slow, step by step reorganisation of spaces, gradual change and evolution of the existent greenery. The concept is based on idea of the minimum intervention that would provide grand results.
