The project site is within the Hangzhou West Lake UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hangzhou, China. The design retains the existing structure and then creates three differentiated courtyards in connection to the spruce trees. People can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the spruce forest and majestic views of the mountains that lie just to the south. The northeast part of the site has a courtyard that is secluded and quiet, divided from the rest of the site. The courtyard in the center functions as the main interior circulation, connecting both the open and closed courtyards. The roof of the project is a transformation and evolution of the traditional Chinese pitched roof, echoing its traditional surroundings.
