To design addition to an already existing object is always a challenging task, above all considering newly established relations and autonomy of annex building. Moreover, with financial limitations imposed by a society in transition, which favors a “quick” design and “cheap” construction, realization of respectable building becomes a demanding task for every architect. Here, an example of addition design is presented – the Annex of Faculty of Medicine in Niš, which won the Annual Prize of Serbian Architects’ Society for 2010. Later on, Garage Group Architects also won GRAND PRIX at the Triennial of Architecture 2012th - Architecture Days of Nis, in the category of architectural projects – realization. The addition was built in 2009/2010, and opened for public for the 50th anniversery of Faculty of Medicine in Niš, in October 2010. Functionality, problem-solving oriented design and high aesthetic values are the best qualities of this addition. That has influenced modeling of the building itself. Clearly defined programme whole has been allocated across separate sections. Situated in a voluminous, white, are halls and classrooms, whereas in the one lower, dark gray are the centre for biomedical research and amphitheaters. The bond between the sections, as well as the bond between the appendage and the existing building is achieved through the transparent parties with the halls and vertical communication located behind. The interior of the building is elegant, yet unpretentious, perfectly matching the educative and research functions of the building. All these, along with improved overall characteristics of the built environment of the urban block, have motivated the jury of the Serbian Architectural Society to award this architectural work with the Annual Prize for 2010.
