The renovation of the castle in Wissem by MSAH architects convinces by a cautious exposure to the existing edifice and perceptive strengthening of the overall impression. The west wing dating from the 1960s got a radical face lift. Architecture is not acting as counterpoint, but a transition of the place. Only within the details the contemporary architecture is visible. The building now provides room for a museum, a documentary centre, event centre, catering, class rooms and a wedding chamber. Main focus of the design was the structuring of the building with regard to its functions. With regard to the energetic concept the castle got a high-grade insulation, sun-protecting windows and natural window ventilation with a heat exchanger. A geothermal heating pump provides the floor heating. The number of materials used was reduced to a limited choice of sensually and haptic substances in order to concentrate on the abstract “invisible detail”. Material concept: Facade: rough mineral plaster, grey, mineral insulation Windows: wood-aluminum-windows Oriel windows: large format structural glazing with wide frames Roof: large-format ALUCOBOND® panels
