Cattedrale di Bari

La Cattedrale ha impianto di tipo basilicale, impostato su transetto e tre navate, delimitate da due file di otto colonne su cui poggiano i finti matronei, sulla cui iniziale esistenza sussistono dubbi, atteso che l’individuazione di tracce di un preesistente ballatoio pensile, di collegamento fra gli esaforati esterni e gli ambienti retrostanti il catino absidale, fanno dubitare della contestuale presenza di un livello calpestabile che definisse, come in altre realtà, dei matronei pienamente utilizzabili. Al centro del presbiterio è impostato il ciborio di Alfano da Termoli ricostruito nell’anno 1953 con i frammenti recuperati dalla demolizione effettuata nel corso delle trasformazioni barocche del XVIII secolo. Al centro della navata laterale sinistra si accede alla cosiddetta Trulla le cui caratteristiche architettoniche la configurano quale possibile antico battistero, successivamente trasformato in sagrestia: essa rappresenta, al pari della Cripta, l’unica trasformazione dell’intervento settecentesco realizzato da Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. La copertura della Cattedrale infine, ha configurazione a tetto a falde inclinate impostate su capriate lignee a vista, sulle quali svetta il campanile superstite ricostruito negli anni ’50. E sempre la parte centrale del prospetto principale è segnata dalla presenza di un grande rosone, ricostruito nel corso dei restauri degli anni ’30, sul quale si compone un archivolto ornato con figure antropomorfe. Altro elemento caratterizzante l’insieme delle masse è il grande tiburio a forma ottagonale che sostiene la cupola della Cattedrale. L’intervento di restauro è stato graduato a seconda dello stato di gravità del degrado ed è stato condotto evitando di procedere ad operazioni di pulitura eccessivamente radicali, al fine di non danneggiare la naturale patina di invecchiamento e consentire quindi l’asportazione dei soli depositi di sporco nonché dei prodotti di alterazione. Si è proceduto preliminarmente ad un trattamento generalizzato teso alla eliminazione della vegetazione spontanea presente dei setti ed interstizi, da eseguirsi manualmente e previo trattamento a mezzo di diserbanti; quindi si è dato corso all’ispezione e pulitura a mano delle superfici murarie e con l’ausilio di spazzole di setola morbide. Nelle parti del paramento liscio su cui sono presenti annerimenti più tenaci e croste nere è stato previsto il trattamento con irrorazione di acqua deionizzata atomizzata o con impacchi a base di polpa di carta ed acqua distillata. L’intervento di rifacimento dei manti di copertura ha interessato particolarmente la navata laterale sinistra che presenta scarsa tenuta all’acqua piovana, ed in ogni caso, ha riguardato anche le restanti navate con una azione globale di revisione dei medesimi. The coverage of the Cathedral, finally, has setup a inclined pitched roof set on wooden trusses, on which stands the survivor belfry rebuilt in the years '50. And always the central part of the main façade is marked by the presence of a large rose window, reconstructed in the course of the restoration of years '30, on which you are composing an archivolt decorated with anthropomorphic figures. Another element characterizing the set of masses is the great dome cladding octagonal in shape that supports the dome of the Cathedral. The restoration work has been graduated in accord with the status of severity of the degradation and it was conducted by avoiding to proceed to cleaning operations overly radical, in order not to damage the natural coating of aging and then allow the removal of the only deposits of dirt as well as the products of alteration. Has been carried prior to a generalized treatmen aimed to the elimination of the spontaneous vegetation present of the septa and interstices, which should be carried out manually and after treatment by means of herbicides; then it is given over to the inspection and hand cleaning of masonry surfaces and with the help of bristle brushes soft. In the parts of the face smooth on which there are blackening most tenacious and black crust was intended to be treated with water spraying atomized deionized or with wraps of paper pulp and distilled water. The intervention of remaking of the roofing has concerned particularly the side nave left that has poor sealing to the rainwater, and in any case, has also focused on the remaining two aisles with a global action of revision of the same.
