A new residential project by UdA inside the former CEAT ex-industrial area in Turin has to come to terms with a limited surface, just about 40 sq.m, and with the simplicity of a box (container) , a plain parallelepiped with long and narrow faces. UdA, in the persons of Andrea Marcante and Adelaide Testa, is given a new chance to cope with a post-industrial context and thus think seriously about the peculiar aspects and qualities of architectural space. The designers ultimately manage to fully develop the theme of multiple structures nesting inside one another. In this way internal spaces are arranged as an external landscape, a continuous flow of commonly encountered shapes, scenes and moments belonging to ordinary life.
The long and narrow space becomes arranged in a sequence of “modules”, turned towards the neighbouring areas and inside in which the owner cooks, eats, sleeps, makes love, has fun. This results in a minimum-sized living module in which the materials and their sensorial qualities change as the various activities take place and shapes are modified accordingly. Wood finishing is different if one goes from the bedroom to the bathroom down to the kitchen; marble slabs appear unobtrusive or even hidden with discretion as if they were abstract characters in the human comedy; and black-lacquered or Corian surfaces, similar to a shadow play, act as linking elements of the whole plot, while their rigid geometric shapes send graphic suggestions and set up a dialogue with the motifs of the wallpaper on the surrounding walls.
Living spaces are thus obtained :they start as strictly functional and eventually become highly emotional units. The materials used in space could change their performance by transformation. Silk screen-printed curtains for example could be transformed into laminated surfaces that subsequently could turn into a coating for a piece of furniture that afterwards could become an independent architecture, a piece of equipment with changing morphology expressing from time to time its functions in unusual ways. Though to a little extent, space still seems to be controlled by reason. Meanwhile a lamb has already reached the table, Mickey Mouse is holding firmly the bench, a small plant has won potting soil back and a scooter is ready to throw new light onto the scenes that unfold in this small loft inhabited by a young businessman.

Un nuovo progetto residenziale di UdA all’interno dell’ex spazio industriale Ceat a Torino si misura con la superficie ridotta, di appena 40 mq. e con l’essenzialità del volume contenitore: un semplice parallelepipedo stretto e lungo. E’ l’occasione nuovamente, per lo studio Torinese e in particolare per Andrea Marcante con l’aiuto di Adelaide Testa, di confrontarsi con un contesto postindustriale e di riflettere sulle specificità e le qualità degli spazi architettonici, sviluppando una narrazione che rappresenta un’architettura dentro l’altra, multipla. Una articolazione di spazi e ambienti interni che si dispongono come un paesaggio esterno: uno scorrere di luoghi e momenti della vita quotidiana.
Lo spazio stretto e lungo viene così organizzato attraverso una sequenza di “moduli vitali” estroflessi verso le aree confinanti, all’interno dei quali si cucina, si mangia, si dorme, ci si lava, si fa l’amore, si gioca. Una sorta di modulo abitativo minimo dove, a seconda delle attività e delle diverse forme assunte, i materiali impiegati e le loro qualità sensoriali cambiano. Così i trattamenti del legno si modificano dalla camera al bagno fino alla cucina; i marmi entrano in scena sospesi o vengono tenuti un poco celati come astratti personaggi di una commedia umana e le nere superfici laccate o in Corian, come sagome di ombre cinesi, tengono uniti i pezzi del racconto dialogando, attraverso le loro rigide geometrie del vago sapore grafico, con il decoro della tappezzeria sulle pareti circostanti.
Da un programma strettamente funzionalistico deriva alla fine una declinazione tutta emotiva dell’abitare. Un trasformismo performativo viene richiesto ai materiali inseriti nello spazio, in modo che le tende serigrafate si trasformano in laminati che rivestono un mobile che diviene una architettura autonoma, una attrezzatura a morfologia mutevole dove le funzioni vengono di volta in volta espresse in maniera inusuale. Lo spazio appare ancora, ma forse poco, dominato dalla ragione.
Intanto, l’agnello ha già conquistato il tavolo, Mickey Mouse è saldamente ancorato alla panca, la piantina si è riappropriata della terra e il monopattino è pronto ad “illuminare” il racconto di quanto accade in questo piccolo loft abitato da un giovane imprenditore, in una corsa liberatoria.
