Otium is a Latin word meaning free time or vacation. A house which has been given such a name must be a blessed place where you can relax and charge new energies after a day of work. The house designed by the architect Sebastian Nagy is being blessed by its own occupier – a catholic priest. Drážovce is a small village close to Nitra. It is a quiet and green place where the treetops breathe a majestic atmosphere. We are now entering the parish garden dominated by the Roman Catholic church of Francis Xavier. From the green at the back of the garden emerges a stone wall – a monument. It is a house called Otio which at first sight looks modest and reserved. Right for the present One feels to be floating between the past and the present. We come closer and there is a floating symbolic cross above our heads that supports a small glass shelter. A large saddle roof with gentle slope literally grows out of the stone wall. There is a stunning simplicity of the most fundamental building components – the wall and roof. When entering the house we are expecting a dark spiritual atmosphere similar to biblical imagery in light and dark. However, we are surprised by a beautifully illuminated interior. There is a natural flow from the small hall going all the way to the living room. White walls and light stone flooring is accompanied by built-in furniture. Design furniture like Verner Panton chairs and Charles Eames Lounge Chair shine like jewels. The self-centred introvert opens up his soul through the large glass wall overlooking the atrium. A gentle turning of the wall on the floor plan allows a direct view of the church tower which holds a symbolic meaning of connecting the present with the past as well as a practical function. The house is a composition of spaces which pays attention to the traditional aesthetic principles. The neat right angle disposition is naturally divided into the day zone and the night zone. In addition, the cut of the floor plan brings the austere minimalist aesthetics into sculptural formation. Visual connection of the priest’s house with the church tower was a simple artistic aim emphasized also by the slightly descending wall dividing the atrium and the parish garden. In this way the house has settled in the environment without any disruptions and is reathing the sculptural atmosphere enhanced by the place itself. Stone for ever and ever “Otio has an Avant-guard ambition“ says the architect Sebastian Nagy. “It is meant to last and react to the generational change of its occupier, the priest“. Planning works begun in 2008 when the priest from Drážovce started to look for an architect who would suit his expectations of designing a priest’s house by connecting the historical context with modern art techniques while keeping a tight budget. Already the first sketches were spot on. Later on, when the works were in progress, a close partnership arose between the young architect and the Avant-guard priest resulting in a piece of unique architecture. A fresh and original idea inspired by the location where it was born, is in harmony with neat interior typical for a city dwelling rather than a priest’s country house. The world is in progress and the church as well. Its tradition of sponsoring great works of the most progressive art and architecture has come to life again. Not in a pompous way showing its richness but in a modest appearance not exceeding final costs of €150,000. The four rooms are exactly made to measure. They provide enough space for work, relax and proper reception. When we consider the excellent choice of materials and efficient building work, we have an evidence of a very professional architect together with client’s right choices. The house is glowing with positive energy which is a result of perfect coordination between all participants. [IT] Otium In latino Otium significa tempo libero o vacanza. Se una casa porta questo nome, è ovvio che sia un rifugio benedetto per chi ha bisogno di ritrovare le energie dopo una giornata di lavoro. La casa disegnata dall’architetto Sebastian Nagy respira benedizione grazie allo stesso abitante della casa, un prete cattolico. Drážovce é un piccolo paesino vicino Nitra. Un posto verde e tranquillo dove le chiome degli alberi respirano un’atmosfera maestosa. Stiamo entrando nel giardino della parrocchia dominata dalla chiesa di San Francesco Saverio. Dal verde del giardino emerge una parete in pietra, un monumento. Una casa modesta dal nome Otio, al primo sguardo riservata. Tra passato e presente Ci si sente aleggiare tra presente e passato. Ci avviciniamo e troviamo una croce sospesa sopra l’ingresso che sostiene una tettoia in vetro. Il tetto largo a due spioventi e bassa pendenza è un prolungamento del muretto in pietra. Una semplicità abbagliante degli elementi strutturali più funzionali, muro e tetto. Stiamo entrando. Ci aspettiamo l’atmosfera lugubre e spirituale delle scene bibliche avvolte nel chiaroscuro, ma sorprendentemente entriamo in un ambiente illuminato dalla luce naturale. La casa si espande naturalmente dal piccolo ingresso a culminare nel salotto. Le pareti bianche e il pavimento chiaro in pietra vengono accompagnate dai mobili su misura. Troviamo degli articoli di design che brillano come gioielli: le sedie di Verner Panton o la leggendaria Lounge Chair di Charles Eames. Anche la persona introspettiva e chiusa sente aprirsi il proprio intimo attraverso una parete in vetro che dà sull’atrio, leggermente girata sulla pianta, che consente la vista sulla torre della chiesa. Così si intrecciano il simbolismo del passato, il presente e la funzione pratica. La casa è una composizione degli spazi che si ispira ai principi classici di estetica. La disposizione ad angolo retto molto pulita divide lo spazio in modo naturale in zona giorno e zona notte. In più, il taglio della pianta trasforma il minimalismo secco in un opera di scultura. L’idea di collegare visualmente la casa del prete con la torre della chiesa è semplice scopo artistico accentuato dal muretto scendente che divide l’atrio abitativo dal giardino della parrocchia. La casa poggia così in un ambiente che respira l’atmosfera sculturale senza creare elementi di disturbo. Pietra ora e per sempre. “La casa ha un’ambizione visionaria. Vuole persistere e reagire spontaneamente al cambio generazionale della persona che la occupa, il prete” dice l’autore del progetto Sebastian Nagy. Il progetto era iniziato nel 2008 quando il prete di Drážovce ha trovato l’architetto che sarebbe stato capace di dare forme moderne al contesto storico della casa di un prete a costi contenuti. Già dalle prime bozze si è creata simpatia che si è trasformata in una collaborazione creativa tra il giovane architetto ed il prete di avanguardia durante i lavori sul progetto. Il risultato è un opera di architettura unica. Un concetto originale e fresco ispirato dall’ambiente in cui nasce è in armonia con gli spazi interni. Cose che si aspettano in una villa di città piuttosto che in un’abitazione di campagna. Come tutte le cose intorno a noi anche la chiesa è in progresso ed in questo modo ha ritrovato la sua vecchia tradizione del mecenate dell’arte e dell’architettura. Lo scopo però non è quello di mostrare ricchezza o sfarzo. Dall’esterno la casa è poco vistosa e modesta e il totale delle spese non ha superato 150.000 EUR. I quattro locali abitativi sono fatti su misura concedendo spazio adeguato per lavoro, riposo e rappresentanza. In piu, l’ottima scelta dei materiali e lavori di costruzione di alto livello danno testimonianza di un lavoro d’architettura professionale e delle scelte giuste del cliente. La casa splende di positivismo grazie all’armonia fertile di tutte le parti coinvolte.
