Obviously a container for hundreds or thousand of people that appears in front of these large planes is different, at first, of any other building. But for that very reason, to try to compete in size with these airplanes is something useless that never is achieved by any construction no matter how massive. We have had the luck to be able to project a new plan, which was required to be of medium size and moderate proportions. Our aim is for the size of the airplane to enter visually right into the interior of the main hall. This is a hall that occupies the whole length of the building with a central lung where it gets wider and where the boarding area will be placed facing the bar-restaurant. From the exterior one can see, through the cafeteria’s windows, the center of the hall with a height of 12 m., the court yard that separates us from the boarding are and, at the far end, the flight field and the planes. Five large courtyards separate each of the different uses, obtaining the feeling of bigger spaces and a larger airport. On other hand, it is usual to find airport buildings permanently artificial illuminated. In this case, in addition to the glass façade, everything happens among landscaped courtyards and the whole hall has zenith light coming through some large skylights. The scale is measured against its surroundings. In the channel of Giuddecca, in Venice, the big luxury cruise ships that we see passing impress us for their size, but in the middle of the ocean, they loose a part of their massive character. Here, we tried make large the small things by placing in the building some courtyards that enlarge it, lengthen it and incorporate it in the large space of the flight field. Even though the needs of the program do not allow, at first sight, to project a graceful tower, now it is there its gracefulness is evident, as the transparent skin that surrounds the tower allows to see the stair’s slim skeleton and its central core, after sunset, when it is artificially illuminated. Un aeroporto è tipologicamente un contenitore per centinaia o migliaia di persone che si confronta con aerei, macchine enormi, senza una scala specifica e si differenzia da qualsiasi altro edificio proprio grazie a questo suo carattere. Partendo da questa osservazione ci siamo resi conto che competere con le dimensioni degli aerei era del tutto inutile. Con questo edificio si è concretizzata l'opportunità di poter progettare un nuovo impianto del quale erano richieste delle dimensioni e proporzioni misurate. Abbiamo fatto sì che la vasta scala del velivolo penetrasse visivamente all'interno della hall principale. Un atrio di 12 metri di altezza, che percorre l’intera lunghezza dell'edificio come un polmone centrale, che permette insieme alle corti interne, di scorgere sempre l’esterno, la pista di atterraggio e gli aerei. Cinque grandi corti separano i diversi usi, determinando la sensazione di un maggiore spazio e, quindi, di un aeroporto più grande. La maggior parte degli aeroporti hanno una prevalenza di luce artificiale. In questo caso, oltre alla facciata di vetro, il tutto si svolge tra le corti-giardino e l’atrio principale, illuminato dall’alto, attraverso grandi lucernari, sfruttando la luce naturale. Il fattore di scala quindi si viene a relazionare con l'ambiente circostante. Nel canale della Giudecca a Venezia, le grandi navi da crociera che si vedono passare ci impressionano per la loro dimensione, ma nel mezzo dell'oceano perdono parte del loro carattere. Qui abbiamo cercato di rendere grande il piccolo, disponendo le corti nel volume costruito, ampliando ed espandendo visivamente lo spazio, per integrarlo alla grande area della pista di atterraggio. La posizione dell'aeroporto non può essere migliore avendo di fronte la vista delle montagne. La direzione dei lavori è stata eseguita dai tecnici scelti dalla committenza, senza la nostra attiva partecipazione. Nonostante non sia stato alterato il progetto originale nella sua struttura, sono state utilizzate delle finiture e dei criteri costruttivi non del tutto condivisi.
