Historic Reference The Palace of Marqués of Camarena stands on the grounds of a former fortress house, dating from the XV century. Only part of the tower at one side of the building remains standing. The main front of the palace still keeps its masonry relatively level. It still has the sound and noble air of the old times. The other front looked disordered and it did not seem to belong to the whole. In the inside the most interesting find was the central cloister, very well preserved, although in showed signs of having undergone but few changes. Design Criteria The essential criterion which has guided the design of the image of the inside has been the idea of preservation. All work in the building has been done preserving all those elements which were previously there. This work shows, as much as possible, its present-day condition and the results of the passage of time. At the same time it has created the greatest possible contrast between the old things and the new ones. Preservation has been the idea which has controlled the final look of the building, the finish and the details in each and every one of the parts of the palace. Coating, flooring, doors, stairs, etc. have been placed in such a way that all the elements previously existing can still be seen. The original structure has been preserved as much as possible. However, being the purpose of the building a different one from the one traditionally given to a palace, changes have been made wherever it has been considered necessary. This essential criterion enhances the building and presents the new spaces as if drawn in the air. The contrast between the old elements and the new ones emphasizes the value and antiquity of the building: new stairs, just barely noticeable but for the shine of the stainless-steel ca les and handrails which were never meant to be hidden; new floors separated from the old walls; new materials parallel placed over the previously existing ones. Analisi storica Il Palazzo del Marchese di Camarena fu costruito sui resti in parte di una preesistente casa-fortezza risalente al XV secolo. Di questa antica costruzione rimane solo la torre difensiva, elemento d’angolo dell’edificio attuale. La facciata principale del Palazzo si conserva con la sua costruzione in mattoni relativamente uniforme, mantenendo ancora l’aspetto massiccio e con le caratteristiche originarie del suo tempo. L’altra facciata si presenta in modo complessivamente disordinato e fuori contesto. Internamente la parte più importante è senza dubbio il chiostro centrale, perfettamente conservato, nonostante abbia subito non poche trasformazioni nel corso dei secoli. Criteri di progetto Il concetto fondamentale che ci ha condotto alla definizione dell’immagine dei differenti spazi interni e agli interventi effettivi di restauro, fino al livello esecutivo delle finiture e dei dettagli di ciascuna delle parti dell'edificio, è stato quello di operare in modo rispettoso dell’esistente. Tutto ciò che è giunto a noi è stato riproposto, dove possibile, nel suo stato originario e con la patina del tempo, così da aumentare il confronto tra antico e moderno. Di conseguenza i rivestimenti, i pavimenti, le porte, le scale, … sono stati collocati in modo da lasciare sempre a vista ciò che esisteva prima dell’intervento, evitando cosi di chiudere completamente le superfici originali. Inoltre, ci si è preoccupati di conservare integro il sistema strutturale originale, adeguandolo, però, al nuovo uso ed intervenendo in modo risoluto dove è stato necessario. Il criterio fondamentale, attraverso il quale la nuova architettura valorizza l’antica preesistenza e ne potenzia a sua volta l’insieme, presenta al fruitore le parti nuove distinte all’interno dello spazio. L'introduzione delle scale con il concetto del minimo intervento, senza però nascondere la riflessione della luce dei cavi e delle ringhiere in acciaio inox, la separazione dei nuovi soppalchi dalle vecchie mura‚ affiancate a nuovi materiali e sovrapposti per strati a quelli esistenti, stabilisce un dialogo finalizzato a sottolineare in modo più chiaro il valore e l'età della costruzione. All'esterno, l'approccio di base è stato quello di ridare dignità al Palazzo mediante due piccole operazioni: alzare la torre ed aprire una loggia come coronamento della facciata più deteriorata.
