The project for the static improvement and restoration of the stone facades of the Cathedral SS. Annunziata has affected the church as a whole, starting from the solution of static problems to which the church was subject, such as the rotation of the north western side of the North facade of the Cathedral.
The geognostic research and direct surveys have enabled to deepen the map cracking, originated not so much from structural failures of the soil or foundations, since the church rests directly on the tufa bank, but from the architectural configuration of the Cathedral, from the neglect and the penetration of the "sack" of rainwater and from the thrusts of the original cover flap made up of the trusses that drained directly on the walls, ss well as from the precarious state of buttresses added at the beginning of the twentieth century as a solution to the static problems that already concerned the church. The design choice was to liberate the eastern facade from the ancients buttresses, present in North-east corner, and emptied of their function as a result of the interventions of consolidation of the covers made in the past (so it is true that a buttress was emptied and used as a temporary sanitary service of the Sacristy). This choice has allowed us to release the Cathedral from these excrescences that prevent the architectural reading, and today, the reading of the church is definitely more clear. The buttresses were uprooted little by little as wrought the work of reconstitution of the core masonry and the "stitching and unstitching" of facewalls. The restoration work has also covered the important stone facades, both smooth and moulded. Regarding the smooth stone facades the restoration work has concerned in particular the rehabilitation of stone materials that constitute it. Given the complexity of the deterioration it was necessary to implement the preconsolidation and at the same time was carried out the disinfestation by biological deposits. The consolidation has restored the cohesion and/or the adherence of the constituent material. The ashlars cracked, the fragments detached were made again adherend. The detachments and the ashlars still useable were consolidated by pins of stainless material and bars in fiberglass. All facades were affected by an intervention of "stitching and unstitching" with tuff blocks of Andrano. The south facade has been recomposed architecturally through the elimination of superfoetations and tampering made to two single lancet windows. The recomposition of the lancet windows, arches and the breakdown of the three portals has allowed the rediscovery of the facade in its spatiality late romanesque. The restoration of the moulded facades has covered all the decorative elements sculpted and moulded as columns, footings, sculptures, frames, architraves, jambs, rose, coats of arms, inscriptions, etc. of the prospectus of the church. All the elements are presented in a serious state of deterioration, consistent with that of all the other stone surfaces of prospectuses, due to the nature of the stone material constituting and climatic and environmental conditions, (the Cathedral insists in a coastal environment, with continuous exposure to winds full of marine aerosol). The intervention is started with the necessary operations of pre-consolidation of the stone material and implementation of safety of the elements in imminent danger of removal or drop. The pre-consolidation was made with the application of dispersions of nano-lime in isopropyl alcohol and/or with grouts and micro-stuccoes made with mortars with a basis of hydrated lime is inert selected for particle size and staining. After finishing operations of pre-consolidation and consolidation, it was possible to perform the necessary operations for the cleaning of the stone material. Have then been carried out, where necessary, integrations of stone material or substitutions of elements irretrievably compromises that were causing injury to the stability of the whole.
All the elements integrated were made with stone material having the same lithological characteristics of the original, opportunely carved and shaped. Also the first byzantine basilica was the subject of restoration and consolidation given the conditions of strong and important state of deterioration in which poured out.
