"Nominal Topographies" is a project produced by RE-Constructing Scranton, a program developed by Matthew Mindrup and Joe Gluba, Assistant Professors at Marywood University’s School of Architecture, to promote recurring short-term architectural installations to encourage visitors of Scranton’s First-Friday events to rediscover the unique potential of under utilized and/or neglected buildings, alleyways and public spaces surrounding the Lackawanna Courthouse. In "Nominal Topographies" standard pieces of eight foot long nominal dimension lumber (2"x4", 2"x8" or 2"x 12") are assembled on the floor of an unused space in downtown Scranton, PA to create a topographical landscape for sitting, standing, watching or being watched. No piece of lumber has been cut. No piece of lumber overlaps another less that four feet in length. No step is greater than eight inches in height (a standard step height).
