The Bangalow Studio occupies the undercroft of a classic elevated sub-tropical weatherboard cottage in northern New South Wales.
The project was an exercise in resourcefulness; an innovative solution to a family’s live/work requirements, incorporating locally salvaged materials and accommodating seasonal flash flooding.
The space is defined by two L-shaped elements - a glass and steel curtain and a wrap of joinery - separated by two large sliding doors connecting the space to the garden.
The glazed wall features around 300 second hand louvre blades, both obscure and clear, set into steel channels. These combine to filter the north eastern light, and offer specific views to the garden.
The shelving and desk joinery define workstations and are made from hollow ply construction, suspended above the 1 in 100 flood level.
It provides a light, well ventilated workspace for up to six people.
