The new University of Dubai campus, inspired by natural, organic elements that make Dubai unique — desert, sea and oasis — was selected by the Board of Trustees, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The crest of sand dunes inspired the organizing wall; sea inspired the walls' helix form; and an oasis forms the heart of the composition. The winning design inspired the client to move the site for the university to the most prominent location within Academic City, a 2,800-acre academic enclave. The project now is sited on 70 acres that will accommodate nine university buildings totaling 450,000 square feet. The new campus will be completed in two phases providing space for 4,000 students in each phase. 2010 Washington AIA DC Chapter UNBUILT Awards Honor Award - University of Dubai, UAE
