Questo piccolo ristorante italiano da 50 posti a sedere nasce come fratello minore del ristorante Olivo, precedentemente progettato dallo stesso autore. Come spesso accade nei locali commerciali, in Inghilterra, la porta d’accesso dalla strada dà adito ad un atrio che permette sia d’imboccare la scala che conduce ai piani superiori (dove sono ubicate le toilettes, la direzione ed un appartamento privato) sia d’accedere alla sala da pranzo. In quest’atrio una partizione vetrata a tutt’altezza ha rimpiazzato un preesistente divisorio in muratura, così da ottenere la massima integrazione visiva fra la sala e l’ingresso, che rimane però separato quanto basta dagli altri ambienti. La sala da pranzo, composta da due ambienti principali e da una zona bar, è fortemente caratterizzata dalla boiserie che riveste le pareti in tutta la loro altezza con pannelli impiallacciati in acero bianco su cui – in accordo col nome del ristorante – è ricavata, mediante una sorta d’intarsio, una decorazione composta da ramoscelli d’olivo giganti stilizzati che creano un gioco grafico di positivo/negativo in cui la colorazione rosso-brunastra e quella naturale dell’acero s’invertono ad ogni risvolto delle pareti. Il pavimento è rivestito da ordinarie piastrelle di granito-grès opaco frantumate e ricomposte in fase di posa, così da ottenere una trama craquelée. Buona parte degli arredi (i tavoli, le panche coi loro materassini blu, il banco del bar in acero bianco e la scaffalatura autoportante in vetro dello stesso bar) sono stati espressamente disegnati e realizzati su misura. Un sinuoso corrimano realizzato in acciaio inox spazzolato ed un divisorio blu caratterizzato su ogni pianerottolo da aperture ovali e da un profilo sinusoidale contribuiscono a dare carattere al vano scala che conduce ai piani superiori. Al primo livello si trovano l’ufficio della direzione e le toilettes, in cui sono protagonisti l’intarsio grafico delle porte d’accesso ed il rivestimento in pannelli di multistrati d’acero assemblati secondo una composizione geometrica di piani slittanti uno sull’altro e separati da un giunto scanalato, mentre dei supporti in acciaio inox eseguiti su disegno sostengono i piani “flottanti” dei lavandini, complementati da rubinetteria ed accessori di serie disegnati da Aarne Jacobsen. This small Italian restaurants of about 50 seats was conceived as a “younger brother” of OLIVO restaurant (see concerned pictures). The entrance door from the street gives access to a lobby which allows to reach both the dining room and the upper floors, where are located a waiting room, the toilets and a private apartment. Here a new full height glazed partition has replaced a formerly existing separating wall, so to obtain the maximum visual integration between lobby and dining room This last one is articulated in a bar area and two main rooms, and it is strongly characterised by a boiserie made with full height fire resistant wood panels veneered with white maple, decorated – accordingly to the restaurant’s name – with oversized silhouettes of olive twigs, in a sort of inlaid work that creates a positive/negative graphic game in which the dark and light areas alternatively change of position at each angle or corner of the walls. The floor is covered with ordinary tiles of mat granito-grès, broken in three or four pieces in order to obtain a craquelèe pattern. Most pieces of furniture - as like tables, the benches located along the walls, the white maple made bar counter and the bar glazed shelf unit - have been designed and made to measure. A sinusoidal hand-rail made out of a brushed stainless steel profile and a blue partition wall characterised by oval openings and a sinusoidal profile on each landing are the most important features of the staircase leading to the upper floors. On the first level are the ladies’ and gents’ toilets, featuring their graphically inlaid doors and a cladding of white maple plywood, assembled with narrow channel joints according to a sort of De Stijl geometrical pattern, while made to measure brackets support the wash basins’ floating shelves, complemented by taps and accessories designed by Aarne Jacobsen.
