Rehabilitation and Upgrading of School of Arts

1. History and Context SAMP - Musical Arts Society of Pousos was founded in 1873 by Baron de Viamonte, devoting himself to the practice and teaching of music, maintaining uninterrupted activity with the brass band, which appealed to the goodwill of the community and the church, using garages and other buildings “loaned” to rehearse and keep the organization active. The evolution of the SAMP was notorious over the years, thus acquiring the title of Institution of Public Utility. The building was obviously in need of refurbishment and adaptation, since also increased ambitions, resulting in a building "LEGO" whit no logic path.

2. Contact

The architecture of additions resulting from successive enlargements performed as required, the works required to fill gaps in legislation, as well as several serious illnesses in the absence of conditions of thermal and acoustic comfort, safety, functional and esthetic, were provided for contact by the administration of the Samp to the studio Cubic Office. For lack of funds, only one intervention was requested to “make up” the façade, which would also reorganize the space of the block front, restating in functional terms the connection of school with the parents - the secretariat.

3. Concept

Among the buildings without big assent value or social memory, the objective of this project lies in the re-interpretation of “new” and “existing” in a merger allegorical. The "vernacular architecture" in a deflected free interpretation compels us to note the extreme effects so getting through the application of sheet metal and textured. Being a school of Arts, whose core area is the teaching of music, the concept of intervention is "clean up" all pollution of the facade, using three-dimensional motion, seeking a virtual relationship with the touch of a musical composition. Worked with a metal facade panels, where the grain repeats a simple design and the movement is achieved by folding one side. But the intervention could not be alone out there... The aesthetic issue was important but the bigger problems were the absence of conditions of the classrooms and auditorium. From the front facade to total refurbishment of the building was a quick step! We felt that to ensure quality of service, should guide the management of such equipment with the minimum criteria for quality and comfort. Factors such as safety, health, educational development programs and infrastructural facilities for the comfort and welfare of the children were taken as first-line consideration. Framing the functionality, the preliminary program and the existing space available, the consciousness of the place, characterized by a degree of rurality, served as the degree of remodeling in pedagogical terms, taking advantage of empty space of the lot, creating curriculum spaces outdoors. Assuming lack of funds, the workshop undertook to finish the project and monitor the whole process of licensing and management of work, without charging any fees, due to long-standing relationship with the school and the architect Susana Venâncio.

SAMP - Sociedade Artística Musical dos Pousos, foi fundada em 1873 pelo Barão de Viamonte, dedicando-se à prática e ensino da música, mantendo actividade ininterrupta com a banda filarmónica, que recorria à boa vontade da comunidade e da igreja, usando garagens e outros edifícios “emprestados” para ensaiarem e manterem a organização activa. A evolução da SAMP foi notória ao longo dos anos, adquirindo assim o título de Instituição de Utilidade Pública. O edifício foi obviamente necessitando de obras de remodelação e adaptação, uma vez que as ambições também foram crescendo, resultando num edifício “LEGO” incoerente e sem fio condutor.

2.       Contacto

A arquitectura de adições resultante de sucessivas ampliações executadas consoante as necessidades, as obras exigidas para colmatar lacunas de legislação, assim como as diversas patologias graves na falta de condições de conforto térmico e acústico, de segurança, funcional e de estética, foram condição para o contacto por parte da administração da SAMP ao atelier Cubic Office. Por falta de verbas, foi pedida unicamente uma intervenção de “maquilhagem” à fachada, que passaria também pela reorganização do espaço do bloco frontal, reformulando em termos funcionais a ligação da escola com os pais dos alunos – a secretaria.

3.      Conceito

Entre os edifícios sem grande valor patrimonial ou de memória social, o objectivo do projecto reside na reinterpretação do "novo" e do “existente” numa fusão alegórica. A “arquitectura Vernacular” desviada numa interpretação livre, empurra-nos para detalhes ao extremo obtendo assim efeitos através da aplicação de chapas metálicas texturadas. Por ser uma escola de Artes, cuja área nuclear é o ensino da Música, o conceito da intervenção passou por “limpar” toda a poluição da fachada, aplicando movimento tridimensional, buscando uma relação virtual com o toque de uma partitura. Trabalhámos uma fachada de painéis metálicos onde a textura repete um desenho simples, e o movimento é conseguido através da quinagem de um dos lados. Mas a intervenção não podia ficar só por ali... A questão estética era importante mas os problemas maiores residiam na falta de condições das salas de aula e do auditório. Da fachada à total remodelação do edifício foi um passo rápido! Considerámos que para garantir qualidade de serviço, devíamos pautar a gestão de um equipamento deste tipo por critérios com o mínimo de qualidade e conforto. Factores como segurança, higiene, programas de desenvolvimento pedagógico e meios infraestruturais para o conforto e o bem-estar das crianças foram tidos como primeira linha de consideração. Enquadrando a funcionalidade, o programa preliminar e o espaço existente disponível, a consciência do lugar, caracterizado por uma certa ruralidade, serviu como principal orientação da remodelação em termos pedagógicos, tirando partido dos vazios existentes no lote, criando espaços curriculares ao ar livre. Partindo do pressuposto de falta de verbas, o atelier assumiu o compromisso de acabar o projecto e acompanhar todo o processo de licenciamento e gestão de obra, sem cobrar quaisquer honorários, muito se devendo à antiga relação da Escola com a arquitecta Susana Venâncio.
