Brief: A collegiate building for Salisbury Response: The project began with analysing the challenging and complex historic context of Salisbury. This provided a basis for generating ideas for a masterplan of the city through speed planning exercises. Following a thorough research of the ideas, the project started to take shape to accommodate educational and leisure facilities within the city centre of Salisbury. Such an approach allows us to address the issue of an ageing population of Salisbury and brings new opportunities for recreation and studying. As the site is located in a conservation area of Salisbury, there was a focus on fitting the design into unusual historic surroundings while maintaining its own identity and purpose. The facility aspires to bring together the public and artists through film by the means of an independent cinema, cafe and outdoor cinema. The whole city becomes a film set where the public can be engaged in the filmmaking process. Such a programme strengthens the creative environment in Salisbury and provides a versatile space for people from different backgrounds to meet and interact.
