Cultural Centre Weiz (Eng - Ger - Fra) ENG The community lacked an adequately meeting hall. Through the erection of a new fire station at the edge of Weiz a site at the heart of the town became available, directly opposite the headquarters of the local industrial giant. The location is marked by small, two-storey baroque and 19th century buildings, the street grid and the squares of the immediately adjoining old town are essentially mediaeval. The response to this situation is subtle and intelligent. The core of the public hall is situated at the centre. Even seen from a distance it emerges at roof level as a "hard" cubic volume. Around this functional and semantic centre are positioned the buffer zones of the foyer, the exhibition spaces and the open spaces, while at an appropriate distance (the width of a lane) is placed an additional office building. The dimensions of the new building are integrated and translated into this historic urban mesh by modelling from this mass of "soft" elements. This is most strikingly shown at the side elevation of the building. Here the building lines a newly created small side street on the opposite side of which Feichtinger has erected an attractive office building that in turn absorbs the impetus of the impinging small town microstructure at its rear and channels this energy into the new side street through an opening in an otherwise hermetic façade. On the other side of the street, on the facade of the Kunsthaus, the dominant motif is that of a "wave" that formulates the change in height from the two-storey neighbouring buildings at the rear to the imposing three-storey ELIN building opposite the front of the Kunsthaus and makes it an aesthetic theme at cornice level. All these mediating elements of the building are made of glass, while the "massive" parts on the west side of the building are clad in copper. The interior of this building with its continuous full-height glazing, its generously broad foyer, its glowing bar at first floor level running around the central events hall (capacity 645), and with its attached exhibition areas speaks a nonchalant language that employs precision. The entire ground floor is reserved for a supermarket that is intended to attract numbers of visitors who will also animate the old town centre. For this reason the large hall is positioned above the supermarket and is directly reached from the side street by a staircase (plus lift). On the basement levels there are car parking spaces. The hall itself, equipped with a stage, a gallery and a high-tech booth, offers above all an aesthetic experience. The black walls are additionally covered with a metal mesh that can be illuminated in different colours by light diodes. GER Die Bezirkshauptstadt Weiz in der Steiermark hatte – trotz ihrer Größe – keinen repräsentativen Veranstaltungssaal. Durch die Neuerrichtung des Feuerwehrhauses am Ortsrand wurde ein Platz im Herzen der Stadt frei, direkt gegenüber den Headquarters des lokalen Industriegiganten und größten Arbeitgebers der Stadt, der VATech, ehemals Elin, mit seinem Werk für den Transformatorenbau. Die Situation ist von zweigeschossigen kleinen Barock- und Gründerzeitbauten geprägt, der Strassenraster und die Plätze der unmittelbar angrenzenden Altstadt mittelalterlich. Auch das Firmengebäude gegenüber ist erstaunlich übersichtlich dimensioniert – bei einem derartigen Grossunternehmen würde man mindestens ein Bürohochhaus erwarten. Feichtingers Antwort auf diese Situation ist subtil und intelligent: In die Mitte setzte er den Kern des Veranstaltungssaals, der nun nach dem bekanntesten Sohn der Stadt, dem austrokanadischen Großindustriellen und Kunsthaus-Mitsponsor Frank Stronach benannt wurde und auch in der Fernsicht am Dach deutlich als „hartes“ kubisches Volumen hervortritt. Rund um diesen funktionalen und semantischen Mittelpunkt lagert Feichtinger die Pufferzonen der Foyers, der Ausstellungsräume und der Freiräume, im gemessenen Abstand einer Gassenbreite auch noch ein zusätzliches Bürogebäude. Die nötige Integration und Vermittlung der Dimensionen in das historische Stadtgeflecht wird aus dieser Masse an „weichen“ Elementen modelliert. An der Fassade des Kunsthauses dominiert das Motiv einer „Welle“, die den Höhensprung von den zweigeschossigen Nachbarn an der Rückseite zum dreigeschossigen ELIN-Bau gegenüber der Vorderseite des Kunsthauses formuliert und auf Gesimshöhe zum ästhetischen Thema macht. Alle diese vermittelnden Elemente sind in Glas gehalten, während die „massiven“ Teile an der Westseite des Gebäudes in Kupfer ummantelt sind. FRA Le terrain du centre culturel se situe à proximité de la grande place centrale de la ville de Weiz. La prise en compte du tissu environnant assure l‘intégration harmonieuse du bâtiment dans la ville d‘un point de vue fonctionnelle et formelle. Grâce à un jeu de hauteur différenciée, le centre culturel offre, de chaque côté de l‘îlot, un vis-à-vis adapté au contexte. Une rue intérieure est créée, distinguant d’un côté un bâtiment de bureaux et de l’autre le centre culturel,abritant des commerces au rez-de-chaussée, un grand hall et des espaces d’expositions, ainsi qu’une salle de spectacle et ses parties annexes. Le foyer s’étend sur deux niveaux et sert d‘espace d‘accueil et de circulation, destiné à abriter les expositions temporaires. Sa façade vitrée lui procure un apport de lumière naturelle et constitue ainsi une sorte de vitrine pour le centre culturel en l‘intégrant dans la ville. Le bâtiment se développe autour d’une salle de spectacle de 700 places. Volume d’une géométrie rectangulaire simple, la salle est un espace conçu pour accueillir une variété de manifestations. L’enveloppe extérieure en cuivre traverse le foyer où se situent les accès et émerge sur le toit du bâtiment. La peau intérieure de la salle est composée de toiles métalliques ajourées, tendues, homogénéisant l’ensemble et occultant visuellement le système acoustique. Le chatoiement et la préciosité du métal sont mis en valeur par la teinte noire du reste de la salle, le plafond, le plancher, la scène et le mobilier. Des mises en lumières spéciales sont possibles grâce aux sources lumineuses, derrière la maille métallique, pouvant se colorer de multiples teintes.
