Il progetto ricerca l’integrazione con il contesto e i suoi elementi caratterizzanti: il parco, il teatro e l’ampliamento di Gunther Domenig, le preesistenze storiche,… Non si pone, tuttavia in maniera pacata e silente. Esclama la sua presenza attraverso pochi ma significativi segni/elementi riconoscibili così da richiamare la presenza della Kartner Haus der Architektur. La scelta operata è stata quella di dedicare la totalità dell’edificio preesistente a “Casa dell’Architettura”: sale espositive ed uffici; e spostare, all’esterno, le funzioni dedicate alle attività ricettive (il caffè e i relativi spazi di servizio) e il book shop – accorpati secondo le indicazioni del bando di concorso -, collegandole direttamente all’edificio principale. Il caffè e il nuovo book shop sono utilizzabili anche separatamente dallo spazio espositivo e per uffici della Haus der Architektur e possono fruire, soprattutto nei mesi estivi, di uno spazio coperto/aperto e dell’intera area verde circostante. Una serie di elementi fortemente caratterizzanti sottolineano nel contesto la presenza della Haus der Architektur e costituiscono il “legante”, l’elemento di unione tra i singoli corpi di fabbrica, realizzando una congruente continuità spaziale e architettonica. L’edificio storico è riportato al suo aspetto originario nelle forature di facciata, ridisegnando il corretto rapporto di vuoto per pieno, tamponando gli ampli fori finestra posticci che stravolgono l’immagine dei prospetti storici. Lo stesso, internamente, viene mantenuto, nella quasi totalità, nell’impostazione data da Marta e Wolfgang Gaertner con il progetto vincitore del concorso del 1989. L’impianto strutturale degli autori viene re interpretato e ampliato a sostenere un ulteriore livello fuori terra (che non altera l’impatto volumetrico di Napoleonstadel), destinato a spazi espositivi, accessibile direttamente dall’esterno grazie ad un corpo scala “architettonico” e ad un ascensore leggero e trasparente che portano ad una sorta di grande “animale preistorico” in vetro e acciaio, dialogante con l’edificio limitrofo di Domenig, che funge da lucernario e da ingresso al percorso espositivo dall’alto. Lo spazio attualmente adibito a bar, ubicato al piano terra, viene destinato a spazi per uffici, come la sua proiezione al livello soprastante, dove viene ricavata la nuova sala riunioni. Internamente viene realizzato un doppio vano scala, servente da un lato lo spazio espositivo ampliato, dall’altro la zona destinata ad uffici e sala riunioni. Il livello interrato mantiene la distribuzione e le funzioni preesistenti. Nella sostanza vengono ampliate le potenzialità dello spazio che, oltre ad attività strettamente correlate alla Haus der Architectur, potrà venire utilizzato per altri eventi di natura culturale. Una “bolla” vetrata, sopraelevata da terra, collocata nel verde a pochi metri da Napoleonstadel, ospita il bar, accessibile direttamente dall’esterno e un book shop a questo collegato. Una rete metallica, una sorta di copertura leggera e trasparente, collega tutti i corpi di fabbrica del complesso fungendo da elemento caratterizzante e di grande riconoscibilità. Lo spazio “coperto”, delineato dalla rete metallica, che accorpa i due fabbricati – Napoleonstadel e il nuovo edificio (la bolla vetrata) – amplia le potenzialità di utilizzo degli spazi, consentendo la realizzazione di eventi di varia natura anche all’esterno. Una serie di insegne luminose (un’idea di advertising che reinterpreta l’opera di Jenny Holzer e Bruce Naumann) sottolinea ulteriormente la presenza dell’Haus der Architektur sia dalla strada che dal parco del teatro. Il complesso che ne deriva porta ai seguenti dati comparativi: gli spazi espositivi passano da 245,70 mq a 326,40 mq il caffè da 80 mq a 137 mq viene ricavato un book shop di 28 mq i due uffici diventano quattro e la superficie complessiva degli spazi destinati ad uffici passa da 40,80 mq a 74,20 mq viene inoltre ricavata una nuova sala riunioni di 42,10 mq gli spazi di servizio agli uffici passano da 46,70 mq a 56,30 mq Il progetto soddisfa pertanto tutte le richieste del bando di concorso. This project seeks integration with the context and its distinguished elements: the park, the theatre and the extension by Günther Domenig, the pre-existing historical structures,... Nevertheless, it does not set itself in a composed and quiet way. It exclaims its presence through a few but significant signs/elements which are recognizable so as to recall the presence of Kartner Haus der Architektur. The choice made was to dedicate the whole pre-existing building to the "House of Architecture": exhibition rooms and offices and, move outside, the functions dedicated to reception activities (the café and its related service spaces) and the book shop – according to the indications of the call for bid -, directly connected to the main building. The café and the book shop are also usable separately from the exhibition space and for the offices of Haus der Architektur. Above all, in summer-time they can make use a of covered/open space and the whole sorrounding green area. A series of strongly distinguished elements emphasize, in the context, the presence of Haus der Architektur. They constitute the "bond", the unifying element among the single building bodies, thus creating a congruent space and architectural continuity. The historic building is brought back to its original aspect in the façade holes, redesigning the right relationship of emptiness for fullness, using glass wall on the wide false holes-windows which radically change the image of the historical façade. Inside, the same is maintained, almost in its totality, in the layout chosen by Marta and Wolfgang Gaertner with the winning project of the tender in 1989. The structural plant of the authors is re-interpreted and extended to sustain a further above ground level (which does not alter the volumetric impact of Napoleonstadel), intended for exhibition spaces, directly accessible from outside due to an "architectural" staircase and a light and transparent lift which takes one to a sort of big "prehistoric animal" made of glass and steel, which dialogues with Domenig's neighbouring building, which functions as a skylight and entrance to the exhibition pathway from above. The space currently destined as a bar, located on the ground floor; is intended as space for offices, such as its projection on the above floor, where the new conference room is obtained. Inside a double staircase has been created. It serves the extended exhibition space from one side and the zone intended for offices and conference room on the other side. The underground level maintains the pre-existing distribution and functions. The potential of space is substantially enlarged; besides the activities strictly related to Haus der Architektur, it will be able to be used for other cultural events. A glass, superelevated "bubble" is placed in the green, a few metres from Napoleonstadel. This "bubble" houses the bar, directly accessible from outside with a book shop connected to this. A steel net, a sort of light and transparent covering, connects all the building bodies of the complex, thus functioning as a distinguished and highly recognizable element. The "covered" space is outlined by a steel net so unifying the two buildings, – Napoleonstadel and the new building (the glass bubble) - widening the potentiality of use of space and allowing the creation of different events even outside. A series of neon signs (an idea of advertising which reinterprets the work by Jenny Holzer and Bruce Naumann) further highlights the presence of Haus der Architektur from both the street and theatre park.
