La Nascita

The installation
Invited by the Stazione Milano Centrale, renowned French artist JR transforms the station’s facade and Piazza Duca d'Aosta into a rocky landscape with his new installation La Nascita. The monumental Trompe-l’oeil blurs the boundaries of time and place, fashioning a surreal architectural fantasy that draws a link between the grandeur of the station today and its history.

In 1906, following the opening of the Simplon Tunnel—an engineering feat marking the burgeoning era of train travel in Milan—King Victor Emmanuel III laid a symbolic foundation stone for the new central train station. As one of the longest train tunnels in history, tons of rock were excavated from the Alps to create the ambitious Simplon passage. JR superimposes the rugged, chiseled facade of the hollowed mountain onto the Stazione Milano Centrale.

La Nascita evokes the historical strata of Milan’s main train station. The building, a testament to transitional architecture, underwent numerous design revisions over its two decades of construction to accommodate evolving visions of Italy. JR propels the station into another transition, seamlessly weaving mineral formations into the amalgamation of classical Roman, eclectic, rationalist, art nouveau, and art deco architecture. As with his installations La Ferita on Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi and Punto di Fuga on the Farnese Palace in Rome, a deep gash opens the Stazione. Where the opening leads is unknown, yet it beckons viewers to consider both the celebrated and sorrowful histories memorialized on the station’s facade, inside its halls, and under its platforms. While wandering amid scattered mineral formations on the Piazza, travelers are invited to contemplate the journey of life and the indomitable human urge to explore, exchange, and migrate. 

The techniques

La Nascita is JR's first sculptural anamorphosis, with individual elements of the installation scattered across a plaza. To bring his vision to life, JR departs from his typical medium––paper and glue––and prints the image directly onto aluminum slats fastened together to form panels that depict rock formations of different shapes and sizes. The aluminum slats, 32 centimeters in width, are first painted white; the visual is then printed in black using sublimation, and a coat of varnish is added.  Although a new material for JR, the slat system mirrors his practice of ink on wood artworks; for these pieces, JR uses boards of reclaimed barn wood to create an organic canvas for ink transfers. In La Nascita, the aluminum panels are both hung on scaffolding on the Stazione facade as well as affixed to a few smaller scaffolding structures, adding to an aluminum pasting on the ground of the Piazza Duca d’Aosta, to create a gigantic spatial anamorphosis.

Like the vast majority of JR’s public works, La Nascita is ephemeral. The installation will only be visible for three weeks. However, with this new technique of printing on aluminum, the work can weather the elements and a permanent artwork can be created from the panels. From the extensive scaffolding structure to the small clamps attaching the panels, the materials employed to create this work of art will be reused in future projects. Any component not preserved will be melted down and recycled.

L'installazione

Invitato dalla Stazione Milano Centrale, il celebre artista francese JR trasforma la facciata della stazione e Piazza Duca d'Aosta in un paesaggio roccioso con la sua nuova installazione La Nascita. Il monumentale trompe-l'oeil confonde i confini del tempo e del luogo, creando una fantasia architettonica surreale che crea un legame tra la grandezza della stazione di oggi e la sua storia.

Nel 1906, dopo l'apertura del tunnel del Sempione - un'impresa ingegneristica che diede avvio all’era dei grandi spostamenti in treno da Milano - il re Vittorio Emanuele III pose una prima pietra simbolica per la nuova stazione centrale. Per realizzare l'ambizioso passaggio del Sempione, uno dei tunnel ferroviari più lunghi della storia. JR sovrappone il prospetto aspro e cesellato della montagna scavata alla Stazione Milano Centrale.

La Nascita rivela gli strati storici della principale stazione ferroviaria di Milano. L'edificio, testimonianza di un'architettura di transizione, è stato sottoposto a numerose revisioni progettuali nel corso dei due decenni di costruzione per adattarsi alle diverse influenze che si sono succedute nel tempo. JR proietta la stazione in un'altra transizione, intrecciando senza soluzione di continuità elementi minerali nell'amalgama di architettura classica romana, eclettica, razionalista, art nouveau e art déco. Come per le sue installazioni La Ferita a Palazzo Strozzi a Firenze e Punto di Fuga a Palazzo Farnese a Roma, la Stazione è aperta da un profondo squarcio. Non si sa dove questo conduca, ma invita gli spettatori a considerare le storie celebri e dolorose presenti sulla facciata della stazione, all'interno delle sue sale e sotto i suoi binari. Vagando tra le gli elementi minerali sparsi sulla piazza, i visitatori sono invitati a contemplare il viaggio della vita e l'indomabile impulso umano a esplorare, scambiare e migrare. 

Le tecniche

La Nascita è la prima anamorfosi scultorea di JR, con singoli elementi dell'installazione diffusi nella piazza. Per dare vita alla sua visione, JR si discosta dal suo mezzo tipico - carta e colla - e stampa l'immagine direttamente su doghe di alluminio fissati insieme per formare pannelli che raffigurano formazioni rocciose di diverse forme e dimensioni. Le doghe, larghe 32 centimetri, vengono prima dipinte di bianco; l'immagine viene poi stampata in nero per sublimazione e viene aggiunto uno strato di vernice.  Sebbene sia un materiale nuovo per JR, il sistema di doghe rispecchia la sua pratica di opere d'arte con inchiostro su legno. Ne La Nascita, i pannelli sono sia appesi a impalcature sia affissi ad alcune strutture più piccole, che si aggiungono a una superficie di alluminio posata sul suolo di Piazza Duca d'Aosta, per creare una grande anamorfosi spaziale.

Come la maggior parte delle opere pubbliche di JR, La Nascita è effimera, in quanto sarà visibile solo per tre settimane. Tuttavia, grazie a questa nuova tecnica di stampa su alluminio, l'opera può resistere alle intemperie e i pannelli possono diventare un'opera d'arte permanente. Dall'ampia struttura dell'impalcatura ai fermi che fissano i pannelli, i materiali impiegati per creare quest'opera d'arte saranno riutilizzati in progetti futuri. Ogni componente non conservato sarà fuso e riciclato.
