The objective set out in the competition brief was to " design of a building that by its conception conveys the essential ideas of a "typical farmhouse" of the Vega de Almería. A new, contemporary reinterpretation of this type of construction must be achieved".

The design arranges distinct white volumes that correspond to the different elements of the program, linked by a circulation space that connects them, reminiscent of the image of the traditional farmhouse as an architectural construct generated by an organic growth that is structured by a Cartesian geometry.

Formally, the design appeals to popular Mediterranean architecture, with thick, smooth, whitewashed walls. Typological elements are also reinterpreted, such as the porch, a traditional space characteristic of these kind of typologies, which was fundamental for both work and recreation in the sweltering summer days.

The design of the outdoor areas revolves around the theme of water as an essential element for agriculture in arid climates, and the reinterpretation of the small infrastructures linked to its storage and distribution: ponds, irrigation channels and drinking troughs.

The design contemplates both active and passive energy saving measures in order to make a building with zero energy consumption and maximum saving energy rating. It has a small photovoltaic plant and Canadian wells, through which air circulates taking advantage of the thermoregulatory properties of the subsoil, which is then recirculated inside the building.

El objetivo planteado en las bases del concurso es “el diseño de un edificio que por su concepción pueda trasmitirnos las ideas esenciales de un “cortijo tipo” de la Vega de Almería, sin olvidar que se debe de realizar una nueva interpretación de esta tipología de construcción que sea actual y acorde con nuestro tiempo”.

El proyecto se configura como una agrupación de volúmenes blancos que se corresponden con los diferentes elementos del programa, vinculados mediante un espacio de circulación que los conecta, incidiendo en la imagen del cortijo tradicional como elemento arquitectónico generado por un crecimiento orgánico que se estructura mediante una geometría cartesiana.

Formalmente el diseño apela a la arquitectura popular mediterránea, de gruesos muros lisos y encalados. Se reinterpretan también elementos tipológicos como el porche, un espacio tradicional de estas tipologías, que era fundamental tanto para el trabajo como el recreo en los calurosos meses de verano.

El tratamiento del entorno del edificio gira entorno a el agua, como elemento esencial de la agricultura de regadío que era tradicional en la Vega de Almería, y la reinterpretación de las pequeñas infraestructuras vinculadas a su almacenamiento y distribución: la balsa, la acequia y la fuente abrevadero.

En el diseño se contemplan medidas de ahorro energético tanto activas como pasivas con objeto de hacer un edificio de consumo energético 0 y máxima calificación energética (Tipo A). Cuenta con una pequeña planta fotovoltaica y pozos canadienses, por los que circula aire aprovechando el efecto termorregulador del subsuelo, que posteriormente se recircula en el interior del edificio.
