Alta Tower | Hamonic+Masson & Associés

In 2017, the agency won an international competition launched by Edouard Philippe, Mayor of Le Havre and French Prime Minister, for the construction of a tower in the heart of Auguste Perret’s rebuilt city centre.

The project started with a vision forged by Perret himself, who had placed a tower on the current location of the Tour Alta. The idea was to bring the city’s architectural identity into the present day. It is precisely this ambition that our project has met.

Overlooking the Bassin du Roy and the Bassin du Commerce, at the heart of Auguste Perret's UNESCO World Heritage rebuilt center, near Niemeyer's Volcano and in dialogue with the city's landmarks such as the City Hall and Saint-Joseph Church, the 55-meter Alta Tower is part of a narrative where architectural adventure has shaped and identified Le Havre as a distinctive city. Revealing the specificities of this context, it serves as a link between two territories reaching out to each other, one with the other: the city and the sea. Its architecturally expressive design establishes it as a new addition to the city-port's skyline.

The plot is located at a nodal point in the history of Le Havre's reconstruction and its built forms. This strategic position, at the intersection of the two urban grids proposed by Perret's general plan, gives the building a unique character and geometry. With great visibility and exceptional views of the docks, it provides a variety of perspectives for nearby residents and diverse spaces for occupants. Playing with the idea of movement, background, and multiplicity, its volumetry accompanies different scales in a game of expansion. The concrete mesh embraces the building's structure, accentuating the twist and torsion that accompany its upward transformation.

Living here means understanding and learning about the surrounding city. It means appreciating the magnitude and richness of the urban fabric that constitutes this exceptional site. Residents are aware not only of the city's unfolding heritage before their eyes but also of the extraordinary potential of this expanded territory.

Both an emergence and a landmark, the Alta Tower also embodies an ambition for the singularity of each residence. The open plan of the floors allowed for "customized" typologies to be configured. Personalizing one's future home was possible from the design stage. The housing question here carries values, uses, typological diversity, dynamism, and optimism. Embracing the future with ambition, the building is a demonstration of vertical living in an urban setting. 

Rare are the opportunities to confront such a symbolically powerful subject. This project primarily raises the question of our relationship with History, our own history, and heritage. Invention here is part of a historical continuity, not of a style or dogma, but of a mindset. Le Havre is Perret, Niemeyer, but above all, it is the spirit of modernity, of an architectural adventure on the scale of its original history: a city built to embark on the discovery of new territories.

En 2017, l’agence est lauréate face aux agences Herzog & de Meuron et Rudy Ricciotti, d’un concours international lancé par Edouard Philippe, maire du Havre et Premier ministre, pour la construction d’une tour en plein cœur du centre reconstruit d’Auguste Perret.

À l’origine de ce projet, une vision forgée par Perret lui-même qui avait placé une tour à l’emplacement actuel de la tour Alta. Il s’agissait donc de conjuguer, au présent, l’identité architecturale de la ville. C’est précisément à cette ambition que notre projet a répondu.

Surplombant le bassin du Roy et celui du Commerce, au cœur du centre reconstruit d’Auguste Perret Patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco, à proximité du Volcan de Niemeyer et dialoguant avec les monuments de la ville que sont l’Hôtel de Ville et l’église Saint-Joseph, la tour Alta s’inscrit dans une histoire où l’aventure architecturale a fabriqué et identifié Le Havre comme une cité à part. Révélant les spécificités de ce contexte, la Tour Alta est un trait d’union entre deux territoires allant l’un vers l’autre, l’un avec l’autre : la ville et la mer. Son écriture architecturale à l’expressivité affirmée vient l’inscrire comme une nouvelle pièce de la skyline de la ville-port.

La parcelle se situe à un point nodal de l’histoire de la reconstruction du Havre et de ses formes bâties. Cette position stratégique, à l’articulation des deux trames urbaines du plan général proposé par Perret, confère au bâtiment un caractère et une géométrie singulière. Bénéficiant d’une grande visibilité et d’une vue exceptionnelle sur les bassins, il permet d’offrir une vision d’échelles variées aux habitants alentours, ainsi que des lieux diversifiés pour les résidents. Jouant sur l’idée de mouvement, d’arrière-plan, de multiplicité, sa volumétrie accompagne les différentes échelles dans un jeu d’épannelage. Le maillage en béton vient enlacer le corps du bâtiment accentuant la vrille et la torsion qui accompagne sa transformation ascensionnelle.

Vivre ici, c’est comprendre et apprendre la ville qui nous entoure. Apprécier l’ampleur et la richesse du tissu urbain que constitue ce site exceptionnel. Les habitants sont conscients, non seulement du patrimoine de la ville qui se déroule sous leurs yeux, mais surtout des possibilités extraordinaires de ce territoire élargi.

À la fois émergence et bâtiment signal, la tour Alta présente aussi une ambition de singularité de chaque logement. Le plan libre des étages a permis de configurer les typologies « à la demande ». La personnalisation de son futur logement était ainsi possible dès la conception. La question du logement est ici porteuse de valeurs, d’usages, de diversité typologique, de dynamisme et d’optimisme. Embrassant l’avenir avec ambition, le bâtiment est un démonstrateur de l’habitat vertical en milieu urbain.

Rares sont les occasions de se confronter à un sujet d’une telle force symbolique. Ce projet pose avant tout la question de notre rapport à l’Histoire, à notre histoire et à notre patrimoine. L’invention ici s’inscrit dans une continuité historique, non pas d’un style ou d’un dogme, mais d’un état d’esprit. Le Havre, c’est Perret, Niemeyer, mais avant tout, c’est l’esprit de la modernité, d’une aventure architecturale à la dimension de son histoire originelle : une ville construite pour partir à la découverte de nouveaux territoires.
