Parkwood Institute, a collaborative project by Parkin Architects Limited and ATTR Inc., is a state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital spanning 450,000 sq. ft. This four-storey, 168-bed facility, situated within an existing hospital site, specializes in various psychiatric services including adolescent psychiatry, dual diagnosis, and geriatric psychiatry. Connected to the existing Parkwood Hospital and Western Counties Building, as well as a new parking garage via underground tunnels, the institute features amenities such as a chapel, courtyard with a labyrinth, and secured outdoor seating areas.

Parkin Architects met the challenge of designing facilities for the Forensic Program by incorporating a model of care known as Psycho-Social Rehabilitation (PSR). This approach, emphasizing individual healing, family involvement, and community interaction, was integrated into the design of home units and downtown areas. The institute offers secure environments tailored to different patient needs, promoting recovery and healing.

As an Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) Advocate Firm, Parkin utilized evidence-based design strategies to enhance patient experiences and ensure safety. Innovations such as safe courtyard spaces and intuitive wayfinding cues were developed, with all materials selected to meet sustainability and LEED certification requirements.
