Chalet Mont-Blanc

The architecture, composed of a palette of durable and simple materials, is thus shaped in the spirit of the surroundings, finding its place in nature. The juxtaposed effect of the design of interior and exterior spaces refines the occupant's sensitivity and allows them to touch the "poetics of space."

This cabin, located in Mont-Blanc in the Laurentians, is nestled in its natural environment, welcoming a young family in the heart of the Laurentian forest, Canada. The project proposes a humble and simple architecture that sensitively anchors itself in its territory: the experience of the place gives way to the forest, a true host for the occupants.

For the outdoor layout, a careful exploration of the site and its elements suggested the introduction of compact volumetry and a monopitched roof, in line with the allocated budget. This form highlights the topography of the land and the mountainous landscape in the background. This approach, visible both on the outside and inside, delicately puts on hold the usual rules of right angles, infusing vitality into the entire residence, which remains discreet both within the landscape and in its footprint.

Communication with the surrounding nature is invited inside from the orientation of different spaces: the bedrooms, located upstairs, face northeast to take advantage of morning light, while family living spaces face west to maximize afternoon and evening atmospheric lighting. The horizontality of the abundant fenestration, capped by structural engineering efforts, was an essential element of a total communion with the landscape. Common spaces are punctuated by elements of verticality: the double-height ceiling emphasized by wood paneling and the delicate presence of the interior window are subtle elements that propose to contract the grand verticality of the surrounding forest to the human scale inside.

Ce chalet accueillant une jeune famille, situé à Mont-Blanc dans les Laurentides, est campée dans son milieu naturel, au creux de la forêt laurentienne. Le projet propose une architecture humble et sobre qui s’ancre de façon sensible dans son territoire : l’expérience du lieu laisse place à la forêt, véritable hôte des occupants.

Pour l'aménagement extérieur, une exploration attentive du site et de ses éléments suggérait l'introduction d'une volumétrie compacte et d’un toit monopente, allant de paire avec le budget alloué. Cette forme met en relief la topographie du terrain et le paysage montagneux en arrière-plan. Cette démarche bien visible à l'extérieur mais également à l'intérieur, a pour effet de mettre délicatement sur pause les règles habituelles des angles droits, ce qui insuffle une vitalité à l'ensemble de la résidence qui demeure discrète dans le paysage et dans son empreinte au sol.

La communication avec la nature environnante s'invite à l'intérieur par l'orientation des différents espaces: les chambres, situées à l'étage, occupent le nord-est afin de profiter de la luminosité matinale, alors que les espaces de vie familiale sont orientés vers l'ouest pour maximiser l'éclairage atmosphérique d'après-midi et de soirée. L'horizontalité de l'abondante fenestration, marquée par un effort d'ingénierie structurale, représentait un élément incontournable pour une communion totale avec le paysage.  Les espaces communs sont ponctués par des éléments de verticalité : le plafond double hauteur souligné par le lambris de bois et la présence délicate de la fenêtre intérieure sont autant d'éléments qui proposent, de façon subliminale, de réduire la verticalité grandiose de la forêt environnante à l'échelle de l'humain qui se trouve à l'intérieur.

L’architecture, composée d’une palette de matériaux durables et sobres, est ainsi façonnée dans l’esprit du lieu, trouvant sa place dans la nature. L'effet juxtaposé de la conception des espaces intérieurs et extérieurs affine la sensibilité de l'occupant et lui permet de toucher à la « poétique de l'espace[1] ».
