for an existing home with a semi-detached section located in the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood in the northwestern part of Ra'anana. The essence of the project – renovating the home to meet the ever-changing needs of a family with 3 teenage kids while at the same time trying to add more modern touches and standards found in many of today’s luxury homes. By redefining and re-planning the common/public spaces of the home, such as moving the kitchen into one of the bedrooms and moving the old bedroom to the upper floor we were able to implement all the changes the family wanted. We opened up all the walls, as much as possible, which allowed us to have more inviting open spaces and allowed more light to enter the room while providing a beautiful view of the yard. The project involved the use of materials including steel and wooden bars which were used on parts of the exterior and interior facade of the house. In addition, we replaced the concrete stairs with a flat steel staircase. The last remaining bedroom on the ground floor was the parents’ bedroom. By combining their room with the kids’ room, we were able to transform their bedroom into a master bedroom. The additional space allowed us to add a walk-in closet and a bathroom with glass walls. The upstairs bedrooms were renovated, and an additional room was added on the upper level of the home to replace the one downstairs that was combined with the parent’s bedroom. The new room on the upper floor was created in a previously inaccessible space located under the home’s roof. By replacing the old tiles with new, high-quality tiles and installing layers of thermal insulation and a skylight, we were able to create a comfortable and cozy room in the attic. The most significant changes the family wanted us to make on the top floor was to replace the ceiling. Rather than install a new ceiling made from plaster we decided to leave the old wooden support beams exposed as a central element in the design for each room. A skylight was installed which allowed for the room to be filled with natural light, as well as adding acoustic glass to help insulate the room from the noise outside. We built a concrete path leading from the home’s entrance all the way through to the front yard and continuing to the back yard which blends with the new transparent central space. The roof was replaced with black steel cladding. The cladding that was used is designed to allow us to install seconds on the roof that can be controlled with a shading mechanism that regulates the amount of natural light that enters the home’s central space during day hours. Once the project was completed, we were able to transform an old home to a new modern, cozy one using contemporary designs with clean and measured lines based on modern
Scandinavian designs.
