'French family looking for an apartment to settle in Madrid for an indefinite period of time'. With this headline, Marion and Paul Franck, a couple with three young children - Leo, Romeo and Zöe - who until then had lived, due to his work in the aeronautical industry, five years in Toulouse, another two in Reunion Island, one in Washington and the last four in London, presented themselves in the studio at the end of 2022. The difference with previous destinations is that Madrid now appears to be the place they have chosen to settle permanently.

And they do so by acquiring a 151 m2 dwelling located on the top floor of a residential building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century in the Justicia neighborhood, near Gran Vía and Chueca, in the center of Madrid.

With a marked longitudinal character and a floor plan organized around three courtyards, paradoxically, despite being a penthouse, the dwelling does not establish notable links with the surrounding urban profile. Rather, as if it were the shell of an armadillo, it is closed and protected from the outside. For this purpose, it has an extensive roof: a 200 m2 surface of undulating and opaque tiles, made up of 7 roofs of different slopes and lengths and consisting of a framework of wooden beams, many of them darkened, in poor condition and hidden behind a false ceiling.

Far from being a drawback, this condition is enhanced and becomes an opportunity, starting to design, so to speak, the house through the roof. The alterations to the house are projected from the spatial and structural understanding of this particular cover in order to return to each of the spaces of the house, without exception, the prominence they had lost. And this is done, first, by restoring it with metal reinforcements, and then practicing a series of strategically placed perforations to introduce natural light and ventilation in order to experience more deeply the reflections of the air, that is, ultimately, the passage of time.

The restructuring undertaken under the roof replaces a dark space compartmentalized in small rooms and corridors with a more luminous and fluid one; an exterior that defines an interior; a new landscape and domestic volume that is revealed through variable heights and changing light, and that overturns and relates each and every one of the rooms with the unique Velázquez sky of Madrid.

The interior of the house, which runs lightly under that great roof of sloping planes, wooden beams and skylights, is projected and defined as a continuous space with loosely defined, indeterminate limits between public and private. Only the changes in flooring, from wood to ceramic, mark both the program and the use of space in each room.

The domesticity is articulated and designed considering the coexistence and different simultaneities in the day to day, as a set of large rooms where the daily actions of each of the members of the household, both individual and collective, take place.

The terrace, 15 m2 and located at the end of the 21 linear meters of the house, is, together with the skylights, the most direct source that floods the entire interior with light, and that, in addition to being a meeting space, also contains a jacuzzi for winter, and summer days.

The scale of the furniture that occupies the house is an echo of the different lives in the different places where Marion and Paul Franck have lived; a system of objects acquired here and there in which some as old as some chairs of the nineteenth century are intermingled with classic designs of the twentieth century or with others from IKEA.

CIEL is a renovation that responds to a singular and common urban situation, where the house does not interact in a decisive way with the city, but with its skies; a house that is a large technologically designed roof; a shadow after all, capable of hosting, under a climate-controlled environment, a domestic program organized in a flexible way where a family can live a stretch, a few years or a lifetime, enjoying the passage of time and its fluctuations under the hypnotic cobalt blue ranges of the unique skies of Madrid.

‘Familia francesa busca piso para instalarse por un tiempo indeterminado en Madrid’. Con este titular se presentan en el estudio, a finales de 2022, Marion y Paul Franck, una pareja con tres hijos pequeños -Leo, Romeo y Zöe- que hasta entonces habían vivido, debido al trabajo en la industria aeronáutica de él, cinco años en Toulouse, otros dos en Isla Reunión, uno en Washington y los últimos cuatro en Londres. La diferencia con ocasiones anteriores es que Madrid aparece ahora como el lugar que han elegido para establecerse de forma permanente.

Y lo hacen adquiriendo una vivienda de 151 m2 situada en la última planta de un edificio residencial construido a principios del siglo XX en el barrio de Justicia, cerca de la Gran Vía y de Chueca, en el centro de Madrid. 

Con un marcado carácter longitudinal y una organización en planta en torno a tres patios, paradójicamente, a pesar de ser un ático, la vivienda no establece vinculaciones reseñables con el perfil urbano circundante. Antes bien, como si del caparazón de un armadillo se tratase, se cierra y protege del exterior. Para ello cuenta con una extensa cubierta: una superficie de tejas ondulada y opaca, de 200 m2, conformada por 7 tejados de diferentes inclinaciones y longitudes y constituida por un entramado de vigas de madera, muchas de ellas oscurecidas, en mal estado y ocultas tras un falso techo. 

Lejos de ser un inconveniente, esta condición se potencia y se convierte en oportunidad, comenzándose a diseñar, por así decirlo, la casa por el tejado. La reforma de la vivienda se proyecta desde el entendimiento espacial y estructural de esta particular cubierta con el fin de devolver a cada uno de los espacios de la casa, sin excepción, el protagonismo que habían perdido. Y se hace, en primer lugar, restaurándola mediante refuerzos metálicos, y después practicando una serie de perforaciones estratégicamente situadas para introducir luz y ventilación natural a fin de experimentar más hondamente los reflejos del aire, es decir, en definitiva, el transcurso del tiempo. 

La reestructuración emprendida bajo cubierta sustituye un espacio oscuro y compartimentado en pequeñas habitaciones y pasillos por otro más luminoso y fluido; un exterior que define un interior; un nuevo paisaje y volumen doméstico que se revela a través de alturas variables y luz cambiante, y que vuelca y relaciona todas y cada una de las estancias con el cielo único velazqueño de Madrid. 

El interior de la casa, que discurre ligero bajo esa gran cubierta de planos inclinados, vigas de madera y lucernarios, se proyecta y define como un espacio continuo con unos límites entre lo público y lo privado poco definidos, indeterminados. Únicamente los cambios de pavimento, de la madera a lo cerámico, marcan tanto el programa como el uso del espacio de cada estancia. 

La domesticidad se articula y diseña teniendo en cuenta la convivencia y distintas simultaneidades en el día a día, como un conjunto de habitaciones de grandes dimensiones donde tienen lugar las acciones cotidianas de cada uno de los miembros del hogar, tanto las individuales como las colectivas. 

La terraza, de 15 m2 y situada al final de los 21 metros lineales de la casa, es, junto con los lucernarios, la fuente más directa que inunda de luminosidad todo el interior, y que, además de ser un espacio de reunión, también contiene un jacuzzi para los días de invierno. Y de verano. 

La escala del mobiliario que ocupa la casa es el eco de las distintas vidas en los distintos lugares donde Marion y Paul Franck han vivido; un sistema de objetos adquiridos aquí y allá en los que se entremezclan algunos tan antiguos como unas sillas del siglo XIX, con diseños clásicos del siglo XX o con otros de IKEA. 

CIEL es una reforma que da respuesta a una situación urbana singular, y común, donde la casa no interactúa de forma determinante con la ciudad, pero sí con sus cielos; una casa que es una gran cubierta tecnológicamente diseñada; una sombra al fin y al cabo, capaz de acoger, bajo un entorno climáticamente controlado, un programa doméstico organizado de manera flexible donde una familia pueda vivir un tramo, unos años o toda una vida, disfrutando del paso del tiempo y sus fluctuaciones bajo las hipnóticas gamas azul cobalto de los cielos únicos de Madrid.
