MOX Bureau | Kozeen + Rueda

Saint-Petersburg-based office MOX (Moss) specialises in landscape architecture and designs public and private gardens and parks. Their Moscow office is a cosy multifunctional space (about 100 m²), with workplaces for a team of architects and a florist, a conference- and a showroom.

The basic principle of the interior can be described as white cube: a neutral museum-like space for design objects and floral compositions created by the florist.

The entire space is composed of volumes flowing into one another, which are broken up into individual rooms by glass or textile partitions. The open plan visually increases the size of the office, and the glass windows and doors offer privacy, while keeping the whole space interconnected.

The layout is organised around axes running from the façade into the back of the interior, accentuated by the position of the ceiling lights. There are windows on only one side of the office, but the shallow depth of the space, the neutral palette, the abundance of reflective materials, and the mirror on the opposite wall help to make the most of the available amount of the natural light.

Each of the rooms — reception, meeting room, florist’s work area and showroom — contains unique objects. The neutral space delicately allows visitors' attention to focus on the form, colour and texture of sculptures, paintings or functional design objects.

The neutrality of the interior is compensated for by the variety of textures: different patterns of brickwork — from historic to modern day — covered in light grey paint; matt reflections on the aluminium surfaces; smooth glass and mirrors.

The lighting is designed with an exhibition function in mind: the direction of the luminaires can be changed depending on the position of the objects. The ceiling structures allow for flexible arrangement of the artwork.
