Bar Casa Relampago | Estudio Tecalli

The “Casa Relámpago” Bar is located in the ancient city of San Pedro Cholula, Mexico, a few meters from the Great Pyramid of Cholula, an archaeological site that shapes and determines the urban and aesthetic conditions of the area. The site is located at the beginning of a commercial and tourist area that surrounds the historic site, and blends tourism, nightlife and the historic center of the municipality.

The lot is irregular shaped, located on the corner of a block dedicated to restaurants and bars, and with an amazing view of the “Los Remedios” catholic church, a famous landmark that shapes the context for several kilometers around in the Valley of Puebla.

Three design premises were proposed, as basic as they are forceful: 1) a base material that molds  the interior and exterior, the construction process and the structure, in this case the red bricks of the region; 2) a vault that covers the majority of the project in one and two heights; and 3) decorative elements that stand out for their particularity and beauty, such as the polished concrete on the floors, framed with golden aluminum profiles, the concrete slabs in the middle of the floor, and the natural wood furniture, which contrasts and complements the other materials of the building.

The biggest design challenge was at a geometric level, that is, the juxtaposition of a rectangular element that forms the base of the building, with the vault that crosses the lot from side to side and frames the view towards the pyramid.

On the façade we used inverted slopes in windows and access door, with the purpose of blocking the spring and summer sunlight, and opening to the sun in winter, when more heat accumulation is needed, and at the same time, show the quality of manufacturing that local workers in the Cholula area have.

Black checkered ironwork was proposed for the windows, and oak wood to cover and embellish the staircase and main bar, as well as furniture elements such as chairs and tables.

“Casa Relámpago” Bar is a manifesto to the mix of contemporaneity, the historic and ancient city, as well as the architectural legacy not only of the Puebla Valley area, but of Mexico throughout its history.

El Bar “Casa Relámpago” se encuentra en la ciudad milenaria de San Pedro Cholula, México, a unos metros de la Gran Pirámide de Cholula, un sitio arqueológico que moldea y determina las condiciones urbanas y estéticas de la zona. El sitio se localiza al inicio de una zona comercial y turística que rodea el sitio histórico, y donde se mezclan el turismo, la vida nocturna y el centro histórico del municipio.

El lote es irregular, se encuentra en la esquina de una manzana dedicada a restaurantes y bares, y tiene como remate visual la iglesia de los Remedios, famoso hito que enmarca el contexto a varios kilómetros a la redonda en el Valle de Puebla.

Se propusieron tres premisas de diseño, tan básicas como lo son contundentes:  1) un material base que determine el interior y exterior, el proceso constructivo y la estructura, en este caso el ladrillo rojo recocido de la región; 2) una bóveda que cubra la mayoría del proyecto a una y dos alturas; y 3) elementos decorativos que brinquen por su particularidad y belleza, como el concreto pulido en pisos, enmarcado con perfiles de aluminio dorado, las losas de concreto en entre piso, y el mobiliario de madera natural, que contrasta y complementa los demás materiales del proyecto.

El mayor reto de diseño fue a nivel geométrico, es decir, la yuxtaposición de un elemento rectangular que forma la base del edificio, con la bóveda de cañón que atraviesa el lote de lado a lado y enmarca la vista hacia la pirámide.

En la fachada se utilizaron abocinamientos o taludes invertidos en ventanas y puerta de acceso, con la finalidad de bloquear el asoleamiento de primavera y verano, más cenital, y abrirse al sol en invierno, cuando se necesita más acumulación de calor, y al mismo tiempo, dar muestra de la calidad de manufactura que poseen los trabajadores locales de la zona de Cholula.

Se propuso una herrería cuadriculada de color negro para las ventanas, y madera de roble para forrar y embellecer la escalera y barra principal, así como los elementos muebles como sillas y mesas.

Bar Casa Relámpago es un manifiesto a la mezcla de contemporaneidad, la ciudad histórica y milenaria, así como el legado arquitectónico no solo de la zona del Valle de Puebla, sino de México a través de su historia.
