The Cork and Wood House | Gurea Arquitectura Cooperativa

A single-family home designed using bioclimatic strategies, constructed in a workshop through an industrialized system of laminated wood, and meticulously completed on-site by its owners.

Situated on the border between Navajeda village and the natural landscape, this home offers panoramic views of mountains, embraced by a winding stream and framed by magnificent, towering oaks. Embodying modern rural living, this project strives for a genuine and deep harmony with nature, reflecting our aspiration for an authentic connection to the environment.

The house stands as an abstract structure in the landscape, with a simple and compact shape, exuding contemporary style. Its facade incorporates natural materials such as cork and wood, combined with a laminated wood structure, seamlessly merging with the environment. The corrugated sheet metal roof mirrors the climatic shifts of the Cantabrian sky.

Externally, the house's singular, simple volume contrasts with the intricacy of its spatial distribution indoors. A gallery traverses and divides the space into two, functioning most of the year as a greenhouse, distributing warm air to both sections of the house. The kitchen serves as the nexus between these two areas, shaping a floor plan in the form of an 'H'.

Leveraging prefabricated and industrialized systems facilitated substantial self-construction. The structure and envelope, composed of laminated wood frames, were crafted in a workshop and transported to the site, where their pieces were assembled in just one week. Finishes and a portion of the minor work were completed by the users themselves.

The use of laminated wood reduced construction risks and time, carbon footprint, and energy demand. Enhanced insulation coupled with underfloor aerothermal heating equates to near-zero energy consumption.

Nestled between rural life and nature, the dwelling perpetually embodies a dual condition: hermetic and permeable, natural and artificial, industrialized and artisanal, refuge and freedom.

La parcela en la que se sitúa la casa marca el límite entre el pueblo de Navajeda y la naturaleza, y se caracteriza por sus amplias vistas a las montañas, por la cercanía de un pequeño arroyo y por la presencia de varios robles de decenas de metros de altura. El proyecto materializa una reflexión acerca de la manera de habitar el medio rural hoy en día, respondiendo a una búsqueda de convivir intensamente con la naturaleza.

La vivienda se manifiesta como un objeto abstracto en el paisaje, a través de un volumen simple y compacto que no oculta su lenguaje contemporáneo. En fachada se utilizan materiales naturales como el corcho y la madera, estableciendo un diálogo con el entorno natural. La cubierta de chapa ondulada refleja los cambios climáticos del cielo cántabro.

La sencillez del volumen exterior contrasta con la complejidad espacial en el interior. Una galería atraviesa y divide el espacio en dos, funcionando la mayor parte del año como un invernadero que distribuye el aire caliente a ambas áreas de la vivienda. La cocina actúa como el enlace entre estas dos zonas, creando una disposición en planta con forma de ‘H’.

La utilización de sistemas prefabricados e industrializados permitieron en gran medida la autoconstrucción. La estructura y envolvente, compuesta por bastidores de madera laminada, se construyó en taller y fue transportada a obra, donde sus piezas se ensamblan en apenas una semana. Los acabados y gran parte de la obra menor fueron finalizados por los usuarios.

La utilización de un sistema industrializado de madera laminada no sólo permitió la reducción de tiempos y riesgos en la construcción, sino que contribuye además a la reducción de la huella de carbono y la demanda energética. Junto con las estrategias bioclimáticas, el aislamiento reforzado y la aerotermia por suelo radiante, el consumo energético de la vivienda es casi cero.

A medio camino entre lo rural y la naturaleza, la vivienda evoca siempre una doble condición: hermética y permeable, natural y artificial, industrializada y artesanal, refugio y libertad.
