KABINA Prototype | NODO Arquitectura + Naturaleza

Since I started studying, I always thought of mechanical systems to achieve a flack pack & relocatable building which could be rapidly assembled without using power tools. I wanted to try something different from traditional wet construction. This type of thinking architecture could fit well into the young and nomad generation, in tourism, home offices, etc. The idea to reuse, relocate or resell a dwelling as a piece of  furniture, seemed to me a way to achieve true sustainability.

During the pandemic quarantine in 2020, a few years after moving to Australia, I started exploring the capabilities of the CNC machine with my carpenter friend, Nicolás Urien.

Inspired by Japanese joinery, we designed the KABINA system to be manufactured with computerized cutting technology. The cabin relies on a system of interlocking joints and a mechanical A Frame that opens itself  like a compass and locks in the exact angle degree to be secured. All of these allows the cabin to be quickly assembled or disassembled without the need for power tools, screws, or nails. This also ensures the longevity of the joints.

As for its shape, the curved roof responds to both aesthetic and functional solutions. It softens the cabin’s presence in any natural environment and acts as the cap of the ridge. We included as well operable windows to allow the user to be fully immersed into nature.

At the moment, we are exploring different shapes, sizes, and we have already included a bathroom and kitchen module for the larger design. By 2024, we will be operating in Uruguay and other Latin American countries, exploring the capabilities of our construction system, KABINA.

Desde que empecé a estudiar, siempre pensé sistemas mecánicos en orden de lograr un tipo de construcción %100 relocalizable y que permitiera un rápido ensamblaje sin utilizar herramientas eléctricas. Este sistema, se podía insertar bien en la nueva generación nómada, en el turismo, home-office, etc. La idea de relocalizar o revender , lo que se conoce como inmueble, como mueble, me parecía una manera de lograr una sustentabilidad verdadera.

El proceso del prototipo fue largo; había todo tipo de inconvenientes que no pude resolver debido a la falta de experiencia, dinero y tecnología disponible. Durante la cuarentena por pandemia en 2020, unos años después de haberme mudado a Australia, comencé a explorar las capacidades de la máquina CNC con mi amigo carpintero, Nicolás Urien.

Inspirados en los encastres japoneses, rediseñamos el sistema KABINA para ser fabricado con esta tecnología de corte computarizado. El sistema cuenta con un sistema de encastres y una estructura principal mecánica que se abre como compás. Esto permite un montaje o desmontaje rápido sin necesidad de herramientas eléctricas, tornillos o clavos. Esto asegura también, la longevidad de las uniones.

En cuanto a su forma, el techo curvo responde tanto a soluciones estéticas como funcionales. Suaviza su presencia en cualquier entorno natural y a su vez es la cumbrera del techo. También, como elemento de diseño, incluimos puertas ventanas.Cuando estás adentro y las puertas están abiertas, no se pueden ver por su ángulo de apertura; para así sentirse realmente parte del entorno. En este momento, estamos explorando diferentes formas, tamaños, y ya incluimos un módulo de baño y cocina para el diseño más grande. En 2024, estaremos ya operando en Uruguay y otros países de América Latina, explorando las capacidades de este sistema constructivo, KABINA.
