The Vaccine Museum is part of the Science Park, a cultural complex with 22 attractions (museums, vivariums, historic buildings and a forest area) set within the institute's 725,000 square meter green area. The building stands out from the rest because it is at the end of the park's new boulevard.

Before the intervention, the Vital Brazil House was used to host the ecology, evolution and herpetology laboratories, as well as the administration of the Historical Museum. Although it had been renovated several times, the historic building still retained its original shapes and lines.

With 550m² of floor space, the museum has a program of six exhibition rooms, an administration room, a technical and educational room, a central patio, a reception, a projection room and a toilets block for the public and staff, all arranged on the ground floor with wide ceilings.

The main objective of the Vaccine Museum is to demonstrate its importance and effectiveness to the entire population through a historical basis, knowledge of the production process and how vaccines work in the body. To this end, the exhibition is divided into eight interactive and informative spaces that make use of different technologies to raise awareness among children and adults. The site has immersive rooms with educational content, games such as a simulation of the stages of the vaccine production process, holograms, a timeline complete with historical milestones and a 6D cinema, where visitors enter an experience to see the human body of a vaccinated and unvaccinated person.

The project is based on the principle of preserving, wherever possible, the historical layers that are relevant to understanding the building's cultural value. New proposed interventions establish guidelines for preserving the existing and adapting it to the proposed new use.

The work of restoring and adapting Vital Brazil House was guided by the contemporary principles of preserving cultural heritage, established mainly by the theories of critical restoration, the basis for the drafting of the 1964 Venice Charter. These principles are generally: distinguishability, compatibility of materials and reworkability.

The Vaccine Museum has a series of windows on its premises, commonly referred to as "testimonies". Arranged on the difference in level between the central courtyard of the mansion (the existing staircase and the steps leading up to the museum's entrance doors) and the museum entrance, they serve to demarcate places of interest that can bring back part of the history present in the building.

The new toilet block for the public and staff was created to meet the new museum's program and the choice to clad it in wood was based on the premise of distinguishing it from the existing historic building. Even though it is different, the block blends in smoothly with the park's wooded surroundings. The interconnection between the museum entrance and the access to the exhibition areas and the deck at the back of the courtyard that connects to the new toilet annex is made from a raised metal deck covered in granite to promote universal accessibility without unevenness. We maintained a unique external language to promote a material connection with the Science Park boulevard.
